The timing is strange, considering Legends 3 and that he allegedly has been wanting that to happen. Maybe he has wanted to leave for a while and now that it was pretty much guaranteed the game would get made after the public announcement he could leave... Possibly finishing the storyline as he intended, even though he left? The story may be already specified regardless of him leaving.

On the other hand, maybe he doesn't care that much about finishing the story arc anyway.

Ivo.

Hmmm, I wonder if he'll just start his own small firm, and contract out instead, or perhaps the folks at Platinum Games may chat with him about doing a project? =)

He's like a reverse-weaboo. A Japanese man bemoaning his fate of not being born European or American, and thinking that everything Western is by default amazing. It's equal parts hilarious and obnoxious.

I find it equal parts hilarious and obnoxious that we're instantly knocking him for his quotes without exploring his reasoning behind them.

Perhaps he was considering the West from a marketing standpoint, saying he wanted to study us to better understand what appeals to us in an attempt to make more money off of us. It seems to me that someone who works as a producer would be interested in what markets to produce games for. He might feel that Japan's market isn't large enough to generate the revenue needed to sustain Capcom.

The fact is, we simply don't know. Criticizing his comments on developing games for a particular market by claiming he has a fetish for that market seems A) wrong when we consider the massive number of consumers in said market, B) wrong when we consider that his quotes don't mean he loves the West, they just mean he wants to make money off of the area and worries that his company is lagging behind, C) wrong when we consider that Capcom's biggest money makers in recent years have been titles that appealed to Western audiences. Of the top 5 highest selling games Capcom has released, 3 are Resident Evils, which are based off Western film properties and appeal to Western gamers.

If anything, you should probably be criticizing him for being too corporate in his approach, because he only wants to make games that he deems to be successful. I should also point out that while he's been quick to drop series some of us have greatly enjoyed, those series had changed drastically from their roots. In my opinion the Onimusha games decline considerably after the first two, while the Breath of Fire series tried a new game style that generated mixed feelings.

If anything, perhaps we ought to thank him for giving two series the axe, because many of us claim to be tired of seeing the same series be milked over and over again. While we may not care for the games he was making, at least he was developing some new series while also focusing on the old, and cutting some older series that we'd admittedly ultimately end up complaining about being the same old thing just rehashed, just like how we do currently with Resident Evil, Mega Man, and Street Fighter.

Um, Ack the Resident Evil movies are based off of the games. Not the other way around.

He's likely referring to the fact that the Resident Evil games were more than a little bit inspired by George Romero.

I think maybe he means that the series is inspired by and strongly influenced by Western style horror movies.

I guess, but that still doesn't make them all that western. I mean the plot of the original in Japan was even more ridiculous than the crazy translation we got.

Jill sandwich!

But still, they set the game in the United States, they got Caucasian actors for all of the live action sequences, they based it on Western style horror movies, with elements of Western adventure/mystery/suspense games... and it's not all that Western?

Agreed. It's clearly influenced by Romero and Carpenter amongst other western haunted house style horror films. As well as western action/adventure games of the time such as Alone In The Dark.
