Game buyback recycler: ecoATM

by CRTGAMER Fri Oct 08, 2010 10:09 am

Looks like another way to sell your unwanted Retro games. Wonder if the rates will be better then Gamestop?

More importantly, where will the bought back Retro games be resold to?

Kiosk outfit ecoATM now recycling video games

San Diego start up ecoATM, which makes automated kiosks to buy back cell phones, has expanded the merchandise it will take its recycling kiosks to include video games. The company will pay consumers for all types of video games including DVD and cartridge type games made for Xbox , Wii, PlayStation and others.

“This is our next step toward becoming a full-service buyback and recycling center for consumer electronics,” said Tom Tullie, chief executive of ecoATM. “We started with mobile phones, then added MP3 players and are now incorporating video games.” Six prototype ecoATM’s kiosks are located around San Diego, mostly in Westfield shopping malls, and in Omaha and Kansas City. The average customer walks away with $25 from an ecoATM kiosk, according to the company. ecoATM makes its money by selling the phones, music players and games to distributors who resell them, or by recycling the electronics for parts.

Consumers in the U.S. are growing more accustomed to using self-service kiosks to pay for groceries or check in for flights at airports. So now these computer stations are expanding into other industries. Coinstar, a major kiosk maker, recently invested an undisclosed amount in ecoATM.

if it's recycling, does that mean they're gonna melt the games down to make new ones?

There was a large stock of Atari 2600 games (millions of common carts) that got sold to a recycler a while back. The folks on AtariAge estimated that there was probably $.25 worth of gold per cart. Of course there's overhead in getting that out of the cart, but it's nothing to sneeze at in those quantities.

I can't imagine them taking apart an old game for parts, you know? It's not really cost effective. They'll just resell them.

At least there is a company paying you to recycle. Cause I have 3 broken playstations. I don't want them going to a land fill. And I don't want to pay to have them recycled. If they gave me enough to cover gas to them, I would be happy.

Okay I just looked where it is in "kansas city", it is in GODDAMN KANSAS. For all you are not geographically inclined, Kansas City refers to the City on the Missouri side or KCMO. If you are referring to the shit hole in Kansas, it is called Kansas City, KANSAS. Kansas City was established before the stupid ass state to our west was established. If you call someone from KCMO a Kansasan, expect a fist in the eye.

It is in nebraska furniture mart, I will have to check it out check time I make the trek over there. When I do, I will tell you guys how it goes.

I think the vending machine kios will only take games not consoles. As far as electronics looks like small items that will fit, such Cell Phones, MP3 players and maybe Digital Cameras.

Well, the original brick cell may not fit.

A collecter's item.

I assumed that they will only take games. I sent them an email earlier. I just want this broken ps1s gone. Maybe I should make a video on youtube and try to get sony to give me something. Or get more broken ps1s and make a fort out of them.
