Putting Raiden and Goldeneye in the same category of gaming doesn't really make a lot of sense. For example; Twisted Metal has shooting in it but I wouldn't call that a shooter.

True, it's difficult to see the direct connection between Raiden and GoldenEye until you consider the others that fall in the shooter genre.

For instance, shmups aren't similar to FPS, but they do offer some similarities to on-rails shooters like Starfox. Now consider the similarities between on-rails shooters and light gun shooters. Now consider light gun shooters and FPS. See the connections? Shmups and FPS are the extreme ends of the spectrum, but they do indeed have a relationship, albeit one that isn't easy to see.

And really that's the point of what this thread's about: what are the general genres that contain so many smaller genres and subgenres beneath them. Technically shooters could be seen as a subgenre of action, and rhythm could be considered a subgenre of puzzle. Racing could be considered a subgenre of the sports genre. And the RPG and Strategy genres both have overlapping titles, such as strategy RPGs or titles like the Heroes of Might and Magic line.

If you're going to use this for your blog, why not just use tags, and tag games with genres that apply to them? Like, for example, a game that falls within Action and RPG would be tagged with both "action" and "rpg", and will appear in both sections. It's really very hard to make a clearcut distinction of things as far as genre is concerned, since so many of them try to incorporate different genres at the same time.

correct. I'm looking for the most basic necessary umbrella genres.

I already do use tags on the blog actually. That's not what this is about.

You forgot the biggest genre of them all: shovelware.

Bubble Bobble is definitely closer to action than puzzle.

As I believe someone else mentioned, if you are trying to have really huge umbrella categories, I don't see any reason to distinguish "shooter" from "action". Or "fighter" or non-simulation racing games, for that matter.

If you really want to paint with broad strokes, I'd just go with "Action" and "Thinking".

Puzzle twice?

I think I want broad, but not super-broad. So I do think Shooter deserves separate from Action. I don't know if Platformer should be separate as well.

I definitely think Racing and Sports should remain separate.

A lot of people seem to think Rhythm should be separate from Puzzle.

Where should say Jeopardy go? How about a casino or card game or pinball game?

And I really hate to open this can of worms, but Zelda? Crystalis? ____ of Mana?

ok, so what I'm really trying to get at is without having 6,000 genres (IE: vertical shmup, hori-shmup, action-RPG, JRPG, etc) how many genres are down-right necessary to neatly categorize every game ever in a well-organized manner?
