Do you believe in game remakes?

by RCBH928 Sat Sep 11, 2010 3:23 pm

Nice question I think

I for one always prefer original things, because the remake is only a copy. Yet it might be debatable if the remake has more advantages/features than the original in anything.

A lot of the best games made were in the early stage of gaming, things like Final Fantasy, super mario bros. , Zelda , and more.

Yet the huge advancement in technology almost begs for many remakes.

Think of it like this:
Imagine there was a good Batman movie made in the 1930's in black and white
now jump to full color CG movies and the bells and whistles to make it perfect exist.
Would you do a remake?

I guess the issue is about the same for many games.

Participate int he poll,
feel free to give examples where a remake is good or bad, or if other solutions exist

How can I not believe in remakes? They're on the store shelves all the time.

Metroid -> Metroid Zero Mission

Pokémon Gold/Silver -> Pokémon Heart Gold/Soul Silver

As long as the remake is a remake and not a port, I have no fundamental problem with it. If it ruins what made the original a good game, then I have a problem. If it is a port, I don't mind as long as the game is ported from a homeconsole to a portable (again without ruining an aspect of the original).

No. No remakes. Developers are lazy enough already.
The PSTV is amazing.

If a game is good enough to get a remake, it should get a remake. Super Mario 64 DS added 30 stars, plus different characters and made the game feel completely different. Plus, I could take it anywhere!

Remakes also let you play through a great game, that you already beat, again. Remakes add enough to warrant playing it again.

So true (though Super Mario 64 DS is a bad example for a good remake). Plus while there are excellent games out there, some times the graphics haven't aged as well.

For example Deus Ex. Imagine a remake with HD graphics and proper animation (the animation they have when fighting is laughable). The gameplay is already perfect so no need to change anything about that.

On the other hand, remaking 5 year old games is pretty lazy (MGS: Twin Snakes and Riddick I am looking at you)

We already have that (kind of). ;)

I don't mind remakes.

On one hand, you have us older gamers who have likely grown up with and played the original. It's a chance to experience something familiar on modern systems. On the other hand, you have younger gamers who may have heard (or not) of these older games, and get a chance to experience them in a format that makes sense to them.

Some remakes can really enhance a game -- for example, Final Fantasy NES vs. Final Fantasy Anniversary Edition for PSP. The graphical presentation is more in line with modern games, and the game has been properly rebalanced. Conventions that were OK due to system limitations 15 years ago are not OK today. I suppose some folks might pine for the original and all of its quirks, but others are going to enjoy playing through something that is both familiar and new at the same time.

The original is not always going to be the best version of a game -- it may be the one you prefer, but not necessarily the most fun or the best experience. Times change, technology changes, and the fact that anyone is willing to go back and update some of the classics is OK by me. It's not as if I can't enjoy the originals anymore if that's my choice, and it's not as if I'm being forced to purchase or play a remake of any of my favourite games, right?

Remakes are tough to get right. Only remake I can think of that were unanimously well received by both fans and critics alike was the Resident Evil remake on gamecube.

What about Super Mario All-Stars or Mega Man: Maverick Hunter X?
