A post about retrograming from ... The Atlantic

by RadarScope1 Sun Aug 29, 2010 12:59 pm

"Gaming Like It's 1999"

http://www.theatlantic.com/science/arch ... 999/62044/

This is a short piece post at the Atlantic's website. I'm not posting it because it will give anyone who frequents this forum info they don't already know. Instead, I just think it's interesting to see more and more gaming articles in mainstream and/or respected news outlets -- real articles, not just "OMG violent gamez!" reactionary news stories. I'm a frequent NPR listener, and I hear a story on gaming probably once a month there.

Also funny that the headline is this websites's former tagline...

The New Yorker recently also had a large article on gaming (modern gaming). It's nice because no game magazine gets even remotely close to the writing quality of The New Yorker.

The typo in the title (retrograming) made me think of a jockish frat boy type who defiantly plays Madden 94 or Marathon.
The PSTV is amazing.

My first instinct was "Hey he ripped off RacketBoy's tagine!" but overall a decent article for the mainstream. Not perfect, but respectful of the genre and hobby.

The Atlantic is a good mag. I picked up a year subscription for like $5 on Slick Deals. Been enjoying it a lot.

Is it online? Have a link?

For anyone interested in stellar game writing, check out Kill Screen magazine. It is expensive (4 issues per year, $20 per issue, or $75 for four issues + t-shirt), but worth it IMO. The latest issue is nearly 100 pages, no ads, slick layouts, thoughtfully written and edited.
