Good S-video cable?

Post by kenshin-dono »

i just realized this probably goes better here

this is kinda a follow up to another post i did a while back on the sony board trying to find a good S-video cable for my ps1. I wound up getting the offical sony ps3 one and it looks great! much crisper and noside free compared to the cheap one i had before, tnx for the recomendation!

Anyway, the problem now is on the older sony 32" trinitron that im running this on i only have 1 s-video imput. The issue is i need to use a switch box since i also have my SNES on s-video. I was wondering if anyone knew of a good quality s-video cable i could use from the switch box? I got my monster snes cable from procablesdirect.com and it has some regular s-video cables for pretty cheap (around 10 bucks).

there seem to be about 3 options. Monster, acoustic research, and rocketfish. Would any of these 3 be a good choice? any better than the other? I know monsters overpriced, but they tend to actually be good quality and for about 10 bucks i figure that sounds fair. I think ive heard of acoustic research but i dont know if they're any good, and ive never heard of rocketfish

so do any of those sound good? any other sugestions?

Im actually not even sure if my switcher is any good, i picked a phillips one up from target i think it was a little bit back but havent tested it. I was having a hard time finding one that did S-video. Everything was either just composite or component only.

I've found AR cables a better deal than Monster with little to no difference between them. You should be OK with AR. Also, make sure you have a quality switch box or it's all for naught!

Really not that critical to buy the expensive "Monsters". Any name brand S-Video cable should be fine.

Well there you have it, the Racketboy forum expert in all things video has spoken! Glad that my assumption was re-affirmed by CRTGAMER.

Still, need to make sure that switcher is good quality. If you don't mind forking over a few bucks for something high quality, I'd recommend the Psyclone Series Video switchers. They are pretty sweet and allow for both S-Video, composite and component connections (although it's a little bit of a pain if you have different connections going in as it won't scale up to component, you need to output in it's native format).

When I was doing a lot of video editing and working with a 4-head VCR capturing raw video for DVD conversion, I did find that certain S-Video patch cables got a lot of interference, being attached to the back of my PC. That being said, I've owned several different 3rd party brands of PS1/2 cables and never noticed that any worked that much worse than others unless the connection to the PS1's AV out was badly manufactured or damaged. I'm currently using an "Intec Universal AV & S Video Cable" Model G5295 (PS1/2, SNES/N64/GC, Xbox) and found it works well. I'm pretty critical about getting a good image on my displays and this was the most convenient I found for changing out different consoles, or hooking them all up at once. I have a switch box I've never even hooked up since I got a few of these for $8 each (I just leave them hooked up to the different TVs and swap consoles around).

well, thats the thing, i wanted to make sure it was a name brand that was decent. So AR is pretty good eh? I'll probably go with them then. Whats the difference between their Performance level
http://www.procablesdirect.com/p-526-ac ... t-18m.aspx

and pro level ones
http://www.procablesdirect.com/p-414-ac ... t-18m.aspx

will i actually see a difference?

Any other sugestions?

I have no idea how good the switcher is. I think it was a 25 dollar phillips one i got at target back when i was gonna set this up a few months back. It does do component but i really just wanted S-video and composite. I actually tried to find it right now but its burried in the closet so im not sure of the model number exactly. I couldn't really find a decent one online that did S-video. I havent tested the switchbox out yet, so i'll have to see how it works when i get my cable. I really would be open to a component switcher suggestion. I checked this psyclone switcher you mentioned. I guess its model number PSC01BK according to their site, right? The problem is that I dont see anywhere to buy it. A quick amazon search shows it at like 75 bucks which is more than i wanted to spend

any idea if the Philips one might be ok, or if i should really look for something else? if so, what exactly? I would think there are decent gamer oriented swither boxes out there that dont cost an arm and a leg

oh and about those universal cables... blea im not a fan of them. I am using one for my xbox right now (original xbox) But its been my experience that the first party ones usually best, or a single use 3rd party one from a good brand

*edit* are psyclones really decent? I did a google and i have come up with a lot of posts about people having video problems with them
