I've read many overviews of Madden over the years, but this piece is far and away the most substantive and interesting I've come across. Even if you are not a fan of the Madden games, it is worth a read. It tells a story about the creation and evolution of a franchise, how it has changed the lives of those involved, and how it has shaped culture; it is a fascinating read. I wish we had more games journalism that was this good.

Some cool things they mention: EA created both the first Joe Montanna football and first Madden game for the Genesis under some secretive circumstances.
The ambulance's departure can be blamed on the NFL.
Trip Hawkins can't play modern Madden games...
Give it a read!

awesome!
D, have you read this?
highly recommended if not. I loved it. I'd like to find some other similar history surveys like this. Anywhere, there's a good chapter on Madden in there too.

This was awesome. I know pretty much nothing about football, but this was very entertaining and well written.
Great reading about life imitating art at the end.
