TOTAL: 60

I posted a few days ago that I beat this in the Fighters forum, but I decided to wait a few days and let other folks post about their games before I posted again. I've beaten 60 this year, which is a nice round number to stop on. I've got more fighters raring to go for next year, among others.

First off, I beat WeaponLord on the easiest difficulty. Yes, yes, I know, normally I wouldn't post it, I'd play through it a few more times on higher difficulties before counting it beaten (I marathoned Art of Fighting four times on subsequently higher difficulty settings one evening before putting it up here). But WeaponLord has a well-deserved reputation for chewing up and spitting out human players. Even on the easiest setting, this game will crush you, and I lost quite a few matches before even figuring out what the controls were...not counting special moves. I must also admit that I managed to make so many attempts because the AI was kind enough on the easiest setting to not kill me after the match, which it has done to me before on higher settings after perfecting me on both rounds.

Over the course of the game, I figured out 1 of the 11 special moves available for my character, despite having to fight all comers twice because I didn't kill them. That's right, the game rewards you for butchering your opponents by making sure you only fight them once. I used Jen-Tai, a massive female barbarian who's range made up for her somewhat slower speed, and it took quite a bit just to get some of the opponents off of me. While you don't want to get knocked into a corner in any 2D fighter, the AI in WeaponLord is particularly adept at keeping you there, and it seems to get some kind of sick delight out of trouncing your escape attempts. By the end of the game, I had definitely become better at it, but my hands cramped something awful.

By the way, part of the reason I've been playing so many fighters is because I was attempting to train up to this game. I've read a little bit from good WeaponLord players on the game, and some of those guys had to train for several hours a day to get anywhere. I don't feel I've got the time to dedicate to it. I suppose it's saying something when folks have to train like they were preparing for a tournament simply to beat the AI.

Ack, keep experimenting with all the combos. It is key to learn the combos.

That being said, I've only completed it as Korr - I usually only have 2, maybe 3
characters I use often in Fighters, and almost never use other characters.
I assure you if you learn a few of Korr's vital moves then it will get much easier.
In particular from the ones I can recall his flaming sword moves and his elbow smash are very useful.

Anyhew:

Since Thanksgiving:

  • VVVVVV (PC)
  • Portal (PC)
  • Octodad (PC)
  • Nelson Tethers: Puzzle Agent (PC)
  • Genetos (PC)
  • Braid (PC)
  • Shift (iTouch/iPhone) NEW
  • Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge NEW

Total: 8

Finally, a couple of non-PC games!

Shift is a short little game that feels like a Flash game. I like its play mechanic (flipping the screen) and it's not too long, though maybe a little short. I think this was my fourth time playing it, and at the price of free, it's definitely worth a download.

As a Banjo-Kazooie fan, Grunty's Revenge left me disappointed. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice little 3D platformer for the GBA. However, it just doesn't feel like a B-K game. Maybe it's because Kazooie is underutilized, or because Mumbo's transformations aren't that great (outside of the tank, but its only used for one type of puzzle, and you don't even really get to use its gigantic gun), or because the game is so short; five worlds and sixty Jiggies just doesn't really get it done for me. I got a 100% completion rate, but it took less than seven hours of gameplay to get it done. Also, a lot of areas just seemed cheap, and the boss battles really had no challenge to them at all. All in all, it was worth the $6 I paid for it, but I don't think I'd spend more.

Same here, I'm surprised by how little it seems I played this year

I don't know if I mentioned it in this thread yet, but recently finished Lords of Shadow, which I find myself referring to it as lately, as there's hardly anything Castlevania-ish about it. Not even candles to whip

I meant to comment before, but that is damn impressive. I am a fan of both of those games but can only get about 2/3 of the way through either before the asshole AI stops making it fun. Bravo!

Hey, thanks, it was very frustrating at times, however, since this is the game that made me want a PS3, I felt compelled to continue, and the sense of satisfaction for winning was still worth it too me. The only race I truly ended up dispising was the second to last, in which you are forced to use and ATV (my least favourite) going up against a bunch of racing trucks.

i beat popful mail before christmas sometime. i thought the game was good. the graphics and gameplay really reminded me of wonder boy in monster world. all throughout the game you could save anywhere you wanted, but you had to beat the last 3 final bosses in a row without saving. the first 2 bosses were easy peasy, but the last boss was kind of tricky. it was a pain in the ass having to go through the first 2 bosses every time you died fighting the final boss.

super meat boy is awesome! it just might be my favorite game i have played this year. i wish all current gen games were as good as this. i didn't find it as hard as reviews were making it out to be. all current gen gamers are just pussies with their auto saves every few steps. don't get me wrong, that one warp zone in rapture city is ridiculous, but it isn't necessary to beat the game.

and i think that will be my last two games i beat this year.
if you took a shit, please put it back
