Donkey Kong Jr. was one of those games that, for whatever reason, I was never able to beat as a kid. Now I am pretty sure that part of the problem may have been the horrible 7800 joystick. Using the European 7800 pad that I picked up at PAX East last spring, I kicked that game's ass without dying once (after about dozen tries). I am now interested to see what other 7800 titles become more playable with the pad!

Iridion II was played at the suggestion of noiseredux, and the game is indeed a visual and audio treat, pushing the limits of the GBA. It is also one one the easier shmups I've ever played, at least on the default settings. I ran through it with no continues on the first try! w00t!

Both of these games were short, but I hope to have one posted later today that I've been working on since this summer. Not everything during this final run up to 100 will be short games...

Also, no one commented on my question about the PCE-CD port of Shadow of the Beast. Anyone played it? Recommend it or not?

@dsh: so there's an actual end to DK Jr? Or is it like the original DK?

@dsh: Iridion II FTW!

The game loops, so like other looping games I am counting it as done once I hit the second loop. There are four stages, and at the end of the 4th you free Donkey Kong.

so you go through the loop twice and then consider it done? Ok. Just curious how I'd (or anyone else) count such games as beaten.

I went through it once - once it starts to loop, you've beaten it (if you haven't continued along the way). Tempest was the same way, as are plenty of shmups. I agree that the lack of a credit screen makes it hard to "count it" the same way that most non-arcade titles can be counted, but there aren't a lot of 7800 games (that I own) that actually have an ending. This one seemed like the best choice to get in a 7800 title before the year ends. Plus, I've been on a bit of a Mario kick...

Interesting. Ok, just so I understand -- if I beat the first 4 stages of Donkey Kong, then I've beaten the game? (By your personal definition?)

Yeah, I suppose so. I also pushed myself to do it without losing a life, and reset every time I died once, so you may want to implement that as part of the challenge...
