Best Game Compilation?

Post by Thermoptic »

There are a lot of good Game Compilations out there like Sonic Mega Collection that contains all the old Sonic games. Or maybe collections like Metal Slug Anthology or SNK Arcade Classics. I would love to get recommendations for other good collections. What are your favorite? (any system)

I can start with a good classic collection that everybody knows. Super Mario All-stars for the Snes.(this game is a special case as the games included are remakes of the originals with new graphics)
The game collection contains:
Super Mario Bros
Super Mario Bros 2
Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels
Super Mario Bros. 3.

The Dungeons & Dragons anthology released for the PC last year is pretty amazing. It contains:

Baldur's Gate
Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn
Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal
Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast
Icewind Dale
Icewind Dale II
Planescape: Torment
The Temple of Elemental Evil

Enough WRPG goodness to keep somebody busy for years. There was also a Neverwinter Nights collection released around the same time which contains the two main games and all expansion packs. I didn't pick that one up, as I already own the games in their original format.

Megaman X Collection contains:
Megaman X
Megaman X2
Megaman X3
Megaman X4
Megaman X5
Megaman X6
AND a Megaman kart racing game that was a Japan exclusive before this collection came out.

There's also the Megaman Zero Collection and Megaman Anniversary.

I also really like the Sonic Gems Collection.

Very much this. There are some awesome compilations out there, lots of great series specific stuff, but man the Genesis collections for PSP/PS3/360 are just amazing.

This again. Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection is just awesome.

That said...I do enjoy Capcom Classics Collection Vol.1 and Capcom Classics Collection Vol. 2. They are both pretty solid. I also enjoy the Taito Legends, Taito Legends 2, and the Midway Arcade Classics Vol. 2 compilations. I have also received some entertainment from the Mad Dog McCree Gunslinger's Pack for the Wii...although I would be hard pressed to call any of the games on that compilation "good".

MAT Volume 2 was pretty nice I suppose, but it's far too buggy and missing a lot of games that would've made sense to be included (NBA Jam T.E., Mortal Kombat 1, and UMK3 come to mind instantly). I can't really call it the 'best' anything because of this.

TL 1 & 2 come to mind for me right away. Great on the PC.

Have you considered MAT Deluxe for the PC? It contains MAT 2 & MAT 3 and it has MK1, 2, and 3. Only issue I have are the clunky menus and the stupid StarForce DRM.

You will never see any NBA titles or anything else that originally requires a license from another organization for that matter on those older compilations. That will strike down a lot of good games that could have been included.
