Sonic, Columns, Shinobi, Streets of Rage - these are all $3-5 on eBay.

The PS2 Genesis Collection was $20 and it had 28 Genesis titles. That's roughly 71 cents a game. Actual carts or not, that can't be beat.

The games also look better on my PS2. The Genesis didn't have s-video (without modding) and outputted natively in 320x240.

I agree with Flak Beard, but I can see where others are coming from. But you have to admit that at least $3 a cart, times 30, would cost at least $90, and that's just assuming that each game is only $3, but considering that many of the games are quite hard to find (some), they'd cost more. So... a $20-30 compilation is a savings of at least $60!

But with carts, they're only worth it if they can't be found in any other form. Like, for example, with the PSP Genesis Collection, I don't need to shell out upwards to $50-100 for Phantasy Star 4. I mean, sure there's some issues with the screen (I have an old Model 1000 PSP), but for the mere price of $15, it's a non-issue.

But nowadays, owning the carts and playing them on their native console is a luxury, at least compared to such mediums as the Wii's Virtual Console, commercially available compilations, and so on.

But don't get me wrong, cuz nothing beats the real thing.

Without trying to sound all purist-wanker, did the PS2 version offer low-res progressive scan? I know the Sega Ages "Treasurebox" collection did, which I was happy about (and paid good money for with the Aussie dollar being very crap at the time, making all import purchases horrendously expensive). But yeah, interlacing hurts my eyeballs, and upscaling old pixel-based games sucks.

(And the NTSC Genesis/Megadrive generally used a 224-line mode, not a 240-line mode).

Yep, the PS2 collection can run in 480p.

I was more querying about a true low-res (15KHz) progressive mode.

e.g: "224p", or "240p".

480p (31KHz) is considered "high res" in arcade speak. :)

By the way guys, Sega has revealed that the 2X filter will be an option, so you will be able to switch it off and play them as they are supposed to look.

Good news. The first thing I do on these type of games is turn that type of stuff off. I hope this turns out halfway decent. Even though I like playing the real games on my CDX hooked to CRT I still enjoy retrogaming on the 360 for the leader boards and achievements and other added value.

Jesus, that's nearly every Genesis game worth owning (needs more Starflight). About the only way they can fuck up that pack is to not let you lock on Sonic 2/3 with S&K.
