Toejam & Earl Revival Effort on Kickstarter

The Ars Technica article will be quoted below, but here is a short version: Greg Johnson (co-creator of Toejam and Earl) is looking to develop a new Toejam and Earl game in the style of the original. In addition to a goal of $400,000, the Kickstarter page shows the usual pitch video and a music video. Johnson plans on having the development take place over the course of two years. There are no stretch goals right now and the planned platforms are Windows, Macintosh, and Linux. My guess is that console platforms are will be the stretch goals.

On Wednesday, the co-creator of '90s gaming series Toejam & Earl announced that the cartoony, hip-hop-obsessed roguelike may soon return—so long as it can rack up at least $400,000 in pledges on Kickstarter. The announcement came weeks after game maker Greg Johnson posted teaser sketches of the funky alien duo with a promise of "some announcements" about the series' return.

The Kickstarter site includes a prototype video that features the same isometric camera and randomly generated worlds as the series' first entry on the Sega Genesis in 1991, only now updated with fully 3D environs and higher-res, hand-drawn characters. Johnson promised a game that will feel as "roguelike" as the original, then reminded viewers that prior sequels were changed at the last minute due to publisher demands in ways that "confused" and "disappointed" fans. "Now it's time to finally make that true sequel, the one we wanted to make back then," Johnson said (in a fake Irish accent, no less). "This time, no publisher!"

Johnson also spoke at length to Polygon about the project, assuring leery Kickstarter users that the initial ask of $400,000 will be more than sufficient to fund the game as it's been pitched—and he'd like "to take two years" to make it. He also insisted that his 32 years of game-making experience includes enough perspective to see a game through from pitch to completion, and he answered a question about Peter Molyneux-related promises in diplomatic fashion: "[Molyneux's] desire to do really new stuff speaks to me at a personal level." Johnson's last game, the oddball Doki Doki Universe, came out on PlayStation Vita last year.

The project includes nothing in the way of stretch goals and only a promise of a version for Windows, Mac, and Linux; other platforms will depend on "funding and arrangements with platform vendors." In the meantime, TJ&E fans can delight in a decent-sounding new recording of the game's theme song, buried at the bottom of the Kickstarter page, by a hip-hop duo named Tonez the Prince and Greg Brown.

I don't see myself Kickstarting this because it looks like it's on track to meet it's goal and I'm not a huge fan of playing games on PC. I'd be all over a 3DS though (or a 360 version which is less likely).

I know I'm in the minority but I thought the TJ&E sequels are pretty worthwhile. All three games have flaws, but they also have a pretty great core IMO.
I'll be curious who the other playable characters will be. I'm guessing they won't include Latisha.

I honestly think I liked the second game more. I guess the original team had nothing to do with it?

Because a multinational company can't risk 400.000$ in development funds

Maybe Ubisoft can kickstart beta testing funds for the next Assasin's Creed, so we can avoid having another unplayable mess.

/rant end

seems like good stuff though, hope it achieves the target goal.

Unfortunately i have to agree with Erik Twice on the original:

So I hope they fix those issues in this sequel. If they do, I'm sure it will be a really great game that I'd love to buy.

They said they were considering console versions, but only if the funding was large enough. At least that's what it says on the Kickstarter page.

Anyways, I'd be down with this. As long as it's a pretty solid game. I wasn't a huge fan of the first Toejam and Earl; I got it on a PSN Flash Sale for PS3, and I couldn't get into it. It's quirky and charming, granted, but I can't get into it's gameplay, for some reason.

I really liked that Dreamcast BETA for Toejam & Earl 3 that surfaced about a year ago, though. I wish we had a game similar to that (haven't played the ACTUAL Toejam & Earl 3, so I don't know if it's the same or not. It probably isn't, though).

Since there was a rollback, I'll just quickly restate a bit of my later posts:
Toejam & Earl 2 was developed by the same team as the original, but Sega pressured them to change the game from a roguelike to a sidescroller.

Sega isn't involved in this new game; it's being developed by Humanature Studios, Greg Johnson's (one of TJ&E's creators) independent studio.

The game might be available on consoles, as stated by the Kickstarter. My guess is that the console versions will be stretch goals.

I'm starting to wonder if they'll hit that 400K. Most of that total was racked up in the first few days and it has been trickling in lately. I'd like to see them hit the minimum just to get the job done as they seem to really care about their old product and bringing it back well.

The Xbox game is not that good. I think its similar to what happened to Oodworld not a very good transition to 3D.

Yeah, they did it! They've also met their first two stretch goals.

I'm psyched. Can't wait for my presents!
