Two weeks in, but I have finally beat a game for this TR!

Image

It's Treasure's 1995 release Light Crusader.

This is an action-adventure isometric dungeon crawler, not totally unlike say Lady Stalker or Pentagram. It's the most not-Treasure game I've ever played by Treasure, that's for sure. (I think they made it for the western gaming market first and foremost.) A very cerebral puzzle solving affair, the hacky-slash stuff is totally secondary. Overall I really enjoyed this experience, although it was perhaps too easy for its own good.

Review here.

That's gonna wrap it up for me for this TR. I want to extend a THANKS to our curator Markies. Without your theme I doubt I'd ever have gotten around to playing Light Crusader.

Please please play Alien Soldier.

Haha it turns out I suck pretty bad at this game. Limited ammunition (in a run & gun!?) and a rather aggressive time limit seem like things that I wouldn't typically enjoy in a run & gun, but I can definitely see the quality at work here. It's easy to see how Treasure took the concepts of Gunstar Heroes and really built upon them for Alien Soldier. In terms of how it all plays out, is there any difference between 'Supereasy' and 'Superhard' modes? Will it allow you to complete the game on 'Supereasy', to see the ending and so forth?

SUPERHARD = there is little time on the clock, less platforms in the platform areas, less power ups, and limited continues, IIRC there's no passwords either. SUPERHARD also removes the option to completely change your weapons between continues. And you can't manipulate game speed.

SUPEREASY = more time on the clock, more platforms to jump on, more power ups, unlimited continues, and you get passwords. The most important thing SUPEREASY gives you, is the option of slowing down time while you're playing it, by pausing the game, then pressing left or right to toggle a meter to change the game speed.

Thanks Ex! I'm going to give it a shot on Supereasy and see how that works out. You can tell that this one was really designed with the hardcore in mind, but likewise it seems like the type of game that rewards patience and perseverance.

I had no idea you could do this. Huh. One day, I may make a run at a fully legit playthrough on SUPERHARD... but today is not that day.

Nice! Glad you enjoyed playing this on--

Exhuminator wrote:-The OST has a few decent tracks, but is mediocre overall.

WHAT! I'm sure what you meant to write was:

"+The OST is brilliantly moody, with eclectic rhythms, and melodies that set my heart on fire. Truly one of the greatest soundtracks in all of video games. I could sit at the title screen listening to the background music all day, every day. The Dungeon 3 Entrance theme is the waltz of the GODS! Worth playing for the music alone."

Right?
It's time for fisticuffs--. There's no other way that this can end.

Maybe you forgot to turn the volume dial up to 11? I'm sure that's why the game wasn't an 11/10 for you, Ex.

If you happened to have beaten it on the default setting ... you already did. Superhard is actually the default difficulty when you start the game with the only other difficulty selection being Supereasy. In this regard I think it's probably in tune with its 'hardcore' target audience, begging the question "Are you a bad enough dude for default difficulty ... or are you a pathetic little girly man?"

Congratulations Exhuminator on beating Light Crusader. You have been added to the first post list of Beats.

And you are very welcome for the theme. With a limited selection and mostly expensive games, I figured this wouldn't be the most popular TR. But, if I can get some people to play games that they would have never played, then I feel this Month was a success.

Treasure has made some of the greatest action games on the planet, it's a shame more people aren't playing them.
