July Together Retro Poll

Post by dsheinem »

Whatever we choose for next month's Together Retro, we will be celebrating some of the biggest, most beautiful (?) failures from four companies (Atari, Sega, Nintendo, and EA) that represent some the biggest names in retro gaming.

Importantly, we will be playing games that are exclusive to these consoles (e.g. they weren't cross-platform, they weren't ported to other systems/PC, they don't have a very similar version elsewhere, etc.). If a game was also released for the arcade, it can "count" as an exclusive if the only home port is on one of these systems. Make sure you vote accordingly! If there is any question as to whether a game could reasonably count as an exclusive, please ask in the thread below.

If you don't have the original hardware, all of these systems are very easy to emulate on even low-spec modern PCs.

Lol, this will be interesting.

Quick question re: exclusives

If a game is a console exclusive but is also on PC, does that count or no? 3DO's best stuff is often on PC too.

Man, the Virtual Boy probably has twice as many exclusives as the 3DO in that case

Yeah...I voted for Atari 7800 since I have almost a complete set of games for it. Then, I thought, “Wait...Are any of those true exclusives? Even Scrapyard Dog has a port. If it wins, what am I actually going to play next month?! Water Ski?!”

Interesting themes dsheinem. I'm intrigued, and admire your conviction.

If you don't have the original hardware, all of these systems are very easy to emulate on even low-spec modern PCs.

He's right. Unfortunately a lot of folks around here disregard emulation for whatever reasons. Their loss.

So, I think people need to think carefully about their voting to figure out if there's anything they want to play that is an exclusive.

Lots of the best games for the 32X, 3DO, Jaguar and 7800 are available on other systems. No Rayman or Tempest 2000 on Jaguar, Virtua Fighter or Virtua Racing on 32X, Star Control or Road Rash on 3DO here - they all got ports elsewhere. The 7800 library of exclusives seems to be absolutely tiny too.

For my money the Virtual Boy is the best system here. Not only does it have more exclusives than most or all of the others (shockingly enough), the best stuff on the system is available as an option. You can play basically any Virtual Boy game you like, except maybe Panic Bomber.

When I'm not at work I'll try and comprise some lists of meaningful exclusives per platform, but I don't think any of them are going to be very long

32X, from a quick perusal, should have Knuckles' Chaotix, Kolibri, Spider-Man: Web of Fire, and Tempo. There's also Darxide, a PAL-region exclusive, Metal Head, which is a 3D mech game, and Star Wars: Arcade, which to my knowledge is the only home port of the game.

Let me add that if Virtual Boy wins, there's a great Windows emulator for it, that also supports the 3D effect via the player wearing traditional red and blue 3D glasses. As in the kind you can buy off Amazon for $5.

32X is the only one of those systems I have so it gets my vote. If anything else wins, I'll be sitting that month out: I don't really like emulating/playing games on my PC. I *wish* I had a Virtual Boy just so I could play Wario Land on it, but it's not in the cards.

It's a fickle beast and I don't really like hooking it up. But maybe I'll actually try to beat Tempo. If nothing else that game LOOKS really good. Or maybe I'll actually get a friend to play through 2-player Knuckles Chaotix with me even though that game is not so good...

(For my money, the best 32X exclusive is Kolibri. It's not as good as Ecco, but it's pretty solid.)
