Hm...sniper battle? Codec channel for saving? There are a good number of elements that are reused in MGS, even stuff like the memory metal hot/cold key transformation.

Holly/Meryl/etc could almost be considered thematic elements of the series though, kind of like having a Hind-D.

I beat the game tonight. It took me a little over four hours, and I finished with the "Deer" ranking. I enjoyed it quite a bit, and I will put some more of my thoughts down in the "games beaten" thread.

So do you need a guide to beat this game? I see a lot of people looking up stuff, if I can recall there is something cryptic about the game that you need the manual in order to beat it?

for me the one thing that threw me off was

when you actually battle against Metal Gear you have to place bombs either on his left foot or right foot. But there's a long pattern you have to do alternating between the feet. And if you miss one you have to start over.


I don't know where i was supposed to learn the correct pattern. I don't remember anyone in the game teaching it to me. Maybe I missed something? So I did have to use a FAQ for that.

One of the conversations you have with the scientist reveals all but the last direction.

May be a codec or two that you need to find in the manual. Metal Gear 2 definitely has a good bit of that for copy-protection purposes.

It wouldn't surprise me if other hints are in the manual, or on an included map. With neither, the game seemed to be fairly stingy on hints.

Dr. Madnar tells you the first 15. you have to figure the last one yourself.

Question: How is the player suppose to learn contacts' radio frequencies?
Big Boss, The Forgetful, tells me to call people but I don't know there number. I don't want to use a FAQ on this game.

Big Boss's "I forgot to tell you" messages are almost comical at this point.

I was playing the MSX version on MGS2HD and got bored. Since I already beat MG on the NES back in the day and MGS, I decided to finally play through MGS2.
I either suck now or am so used to other game styles I had a hard time getting past the first boss fight (couldn't hit the boss if I tried) and the hallway full of soldiers (2nd boss battle?).
I am enjoying it, but I forgot most of the details from the first game's stories so I am currently rereading the MGS 12 issue comic series for a story refresh.

I got that one, but I could not find the compass to save my life.

Like many games of its era, it can be a bit archaic at times. I did enjoy it, however, and I think it would have been mind-blowing at the time of its release. I recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the series or anyone interested in the history of game design, and since you can get through it in 4-5 hours, it does not require a lot of commitment.

I tried to play a little more Metal Gear 2 tonight. Despite all the mechanical improvements though, I'm just not having any fun with this game. It's more frustrating than the first by far.
