The whole complex blows up, so Metal Gear is allegedly destroyed...
Maybe what you mean is "you don't really fight against Metal Gear"?

That's exactly it. The game is about it, the titular super-weapon is mentioned all over the place, and you just end up going against your superior, which is revisited in another NES game --

Code Name Viper

So yeah. A bit disappointed.

EDIT: In the MSX version, you do fight the Metal Gear?

Anyway, if this phenomena is on TVTropes, you bet it's legit!

MSX ending description...

Yes, just before facing the Big Boss, there is a hangar where you confront Metal Gear, but while being shot at by a couple of lasers. The Metal Gear itself appears to not be operating, which is what I thought you were complaining about. You destroy it by placing more than 5 plastic explosives in each leg in a specific sequence like Left Left Left Right etc. The thing then starts to explode and sets the whole complex to blow up big style. As you start to escape, you are then confronted by the traitor, Big Boss, which was giving you late or incorrect information throughout the game and even orders you to shut down the MSX just before facing Metal Gear.

Late to the party on this, even though I got blueMSX working in january.

Will probably finish this later, just need to make a few notes.

-The key changing is infuriating especially in gassed areas.

-I feel the designers didn't think how certain rooms would play out when you have to backtrack through them.

-Is it me or can you only shoot in four directions? Seems unfair when enemies can shoot in eight.

-Why didn't Konami let ammo pickups completely refill your stock? You can just keep re-entering rooms to acquire more anyway.

-The pitfalls are cheap.

Aside from those oversights and some issues with difficulty it is a very good game. I'm surprised how much like MGS it is.

Semantics, but it's the other way around. :P

I'm still playing as well, so we can be late players together. I'm fairly certain I'm getting close ... working on:
Saving someone's daughter?

Aye, you're getting there. Be warned: there are a lot of pitfalls ahead of you!

I think I am now close to the final section. Just have to stock up on rations.

EDIT: Ugh, I went to get some rations and now I can't use the same elevator to return to the floor I want and have to go all the way round again. Again, a puzzling oversight in development.

The elevator thing feels like Kojima trolling us.

He knows exactly what he's doing to us, the slag. I want to start M.U.L.E, dammit!

I will beat it, but I'm giving it a rest until tomorrow. Good luck, Stark!

EDIT: I did it. Wasn't so bad.
