I own this on the Super Nintendo, so I may give it a go and see how I feel about it. Just as long as it is better than Populous was.

I have no clue how i'll get my hands on this one.

What's the best version? If I do play it I will probably get the Snes version.

I got the $5.99 package from GOG, which has the first 2 games & all the expansion packs that go with them. It also has the manual (written like a magazine) and the reference cards with all the keyboard commands you'll need. I've played the SNES ports and they are near perfect conversions. I am real excited to be doing this on the PC! The fact GOG uses DOSBOX for their DOS games is also nice.

I was hoping to join in playing this on 3DO, but unfortunately I neither have the money or the console available. I'm not really interested in a digital download that I cant sell on if I don't like it, so I guess I'll just have to enjoy reading everyone elses thoughts about this one!

Did the first 2 missions today and got my first medal. :) The original on the PC is just as nice as the SNES ports were. I can see that the SNES ports did cut a bit of violence/blood out in the cutscenes and renamed Hell's Kitchen (the final area on the "losing" path) to Apocalypse. Nintendo of the early 90s for ya  What really amazed me on the SNES was the way they used all the buttons on the controller for every single command. It's much easier to use a keyboard for everything.

Bit of a funny moment to all those starting out for the first time -- watch asteroids and minefields. Slow down to 250 klicks or below, and make SURE YOU'RE WATCHING YOUR FRONT VIEW. You may be able to shoot some down, but some can't be shot and my ship was in real bad shape after running into one, I lost a laser cannon and had to take out 2-3 more Salthis with only ONE shot at a time. Fortunately my wingman killed one for me. I REALLY don't want to spoil this game anymore as it appears not many have heard or played of this. It may be called a simulation but it's not CRAZY on the sim, so it's a perfect game to get into. Check out the article on the main site and please post your progress here!

I started playing this a few months ago but got stuck on my fourth mission. Then I saw it was going to be a Together Retro while everyone was playing Baldur's Gate, so I decided to shelve it until now.

One really cool thing about the game is that there is a massively branching mission path. If you fail the objectives of a mission but still survive then you go do mission B instead of mission A, and unless you've fallen too far away from the winning path you can still get to the best ending if you win the right missions going forward. I think I remember once seeing a recommendation to strategically fail particular missions to skip something ridiculous and do an easier mission to get back on the winning path.

Here is the first game path from the bonus material I got with the game yesterday -- only look if you want to plan a "strategic" course of your own!
