Who's playing? Which version? What do you think?

I started the PSN version Sunday night. And I'm just starting the third episode. This version plays great, and actually I'm finding the dualshock a great way to play actually.

Though I'm not all that experienced with FPS's, I did play this back in the day as a shareware title. I tend to really appreciate all those early FPS games, perhaps more than current ones. Though I'm thinking that if I beat Wolf3D too soon, I'll likely check out the PS2 and PS3 sequels, which could be a nice way to sort of follow the genre's progression. Right?

You mean Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Wolfenstein, respectively? You might also consider the original game named Castle Wolfenstein, released in 1981, or its sequel Beyond Castle Wolfenstein. And then there is the Wolfenstein 3D expansion, Spear of Destiny, as well as a free multiplayer game named Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory.

There is a lot to play this month!

Oh shit I totally forgot about this one! I have the DOS CD-ROM version of Wolfenstein 3D. I have some other stuff to play first, like Ys Seven, but I'll be joining you guys in a couple of weeks.

I plan to play Wolf3D on the PC (Steam copy) and the new Wolfenstein on the 360 (haven't played this yet). RTCW is by far my favorite entry in the series, though I might give it a pass this month.

that good, eh? I'll try to pick it up then -- it's like $4 at Gamestop.

No, I want you to sit it in front of a PC :D

j/k of course, but these are games that defined the PC as a superior FPS platform in many ways, so something inside me dies when people play it in their own preferred way

technically, I am sitting in front of a PC when I play my PS3. So you should feel better now.

But seriously, Wolf3D and Doom were games I did initially play on keyboard/mouse back in the day. I can tell you that I find playing this on a dualshock way more comfortable for me. In fact, I could never even beat Ep1 back then. I'm on Ep3 already now. I'm sure it's not "pure" to play FPS with a controller, but if I'm comfortable and can actually progress through the game this way, then why would I handicap myself for the sake of purity?

---

My thoughts thus far:

Ep1 - is exactly the way I remembered Wolf3d. I find it kind of amazing that I had never beaten this episode back in the day. It's really not that long really. Of course there were a couple of floors (I want to say 4 and 7 maybe?) that took me like 15 or 20 mins to get through just because I'd get myself lost. I feel like playing without a map, and going through areas that basically just look like the same rooms gets pretty damn confusing. But opening a door seeing that first boss was a real HOLYSHIT moment. And I definitely felt triumphant when I took him down.

Ep2 - was cool, as it brought in the zombies (they're zombies right?) and had some weird scenery which I had never seen playing only Ep1 when I was younger. Most of the floors felt pretty easy though. There were only a couple that were as long as most of the ones in Ep1. And the second boss seemed easier than the first boss as well.

I played the first episode of this game way back in 1993 when I got a copy of it from someone in school. I'll always remember those memory meters on the left when the game starts up. I had no sound card in my first 486 till the following year so I had those wonderful PC speaker sounds, but the game ran incredibly well for the crap hardware (Doom, however, was another story).

I eventually played maybe like 2 or 3 episodes years later but I never *really* got into the game. I was playing Doom and Blake Stone Aliens of Gold (which used a slightly modded Wolf3D engine).

Then I found out there was a Game Boy Advance port. Got it last month, and that is where I will be playing it this month. I know it's going to be minus the Adlib soundtrack, but to return to where it pretty much all began without WASD, automaps, mouselook and all that will certainly be a trip. I still play Unreal Tournament 2004 pretty much every night so I'm going back to basics.
