Battles are not turned based. And there’s no swinging swords. Instead you literally ram into enemies. Running into them off-center or from the side or back will increase your chances of getting a hit rather than taking damage.

Since the DS version is listed among the recommended ports, it probably should be pointed out, somewhere in the article that the controls are changed quite a bit.

There are two control options: Normal and Stylus.

In normal mode, you move Adol around with the D-Pad, but the whole running into enemies to hurt them mechanic is gone. Instead you have to press a button to swing your sword. This completely changes combat, making it much more similar to most other action RPGs.

In stylus mode, Ys signature combat mechanic is restored, however you can't use the d-pad to move around. You have to point to where you want Adol to move with the stylus.

Stylus control is complete shit, and there is no way to use a d-pad and still have the classic style combat.

I played through the DS version last summer, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. (Although, I will agree that the stylus controls are pointless.) Your character does swing a sword if you use the d-pad controls, but the sword is so ridiculously short that you might as well be ramming into the enemies. Moreover, you do considerably more damages if you hit the enemies from the back or sides, and the best way to hit them without taking damages is by quickly running up to the enemies and "ramming" them while swing your sword. Finally - if i recall correctly - you get pushed back a bit whenever you hit an enemy; so, you cannot just stand in one spot swinging your weapon. (It would not reach anything anyway...)

In any event, I thought that the basic gameplay and story had aged very well; so, if this is your first time through the game, you are in for a treat.

(Also, if you enjoy Part I, I suggest moving directly on to Part II. The gameplay is very similar and they form both parts of a larger story arc.)

BTW, has anyone ever played the Saturn version on the Japanese Falcom Classics collection?
Because from what I can tell, it looks really good, despite not being in English.

Nice. I've been looking forward to this. I'll have to fire up the TG-CD this weekend and join in. Oddly enough, I've never played the Ys games, except Ys lll on SNES.

Noise, grind till your at least a level six.You can also buy better armor at this point, avoid the blue flames and wait to strike when he's more open in the middle.
Im still trying to find my way back to Barbados Port before I fight the 2nd boss.

Started the TG16 version of the game (Wii VC) tonight and am enjoying it.

I grinded until I could afford all of the $2000 weapons, armor, and shield before going into the shrine.
I beat the first mini boss and then the shrine boss (centipede?).
I now have the first book of Y's, the power ring, the katana, the silver shield, the reflexive armor, and am level 12.

I will tackle the mines this weekend.

I only mentioned it because the combat changes in the DS version don't seem to be very popular with most longtime Ys fans. A couple reviews I read of the PSP port in particular mentioned how superior it was to the DS version because combat wasn't altered. My reaction was quite the opposite. I've played the TurboCD and DS versions and if I were playing it again this month I'd definitely be playing on the DS.

I got the silver sword and spent the last hour or so trying to beat the bat boss in the mines. I've tried every strategy I could think of...and even looked for help online. I just can't beat him. I'm at level 17 maybe I need to grind more.

I'm up to level 6, and am able to go through the Palace pretty easily now. I have the long sword, medium shield, and plate armor. I haven't gotten everything there yet, but it should be no problem tomorrow.
