So I just finished the fifth mission - a little past 1/3 of the way through and so far I am quite impressed by the amount of features and the variety in level design for a game of this age. The difficulty seems quite fair - I have gotten out of at least one level while on my last life and had to repeat one of the others. I thought I'd really mind the "no save anywhere" feature but it gives the game an old school challenge that almost all current gen single player FPS games are missing. Great game so far!

I'm still on the 2nd mission, though I've only tried it twice. I understand the old school feel of only saving after missions, but I do wish I could save mid-mission at the same time. But it's no game-breaker. Though I've only played 2 missions so far, I think the game is quite impressive and awesome. I can see myself sticking to it all month. How many missions are there total?

14 missions on the PC, and I assume the same on PS1.

There's a really great FAQ on GameFAQs that has interesting information in addition to the walkthrough. I haven't felt the need to look at the walkthrough section, but all the other info is quite good: http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/3397-star-wa ... /faqs/2031

Cool nugget from the FAQ:

8.7 Is there a DF fan club?
===========================
There is a Dark Forces Fan Club on America On-Line. It meets every Tuesday
evening at 10:00 pm Eastern time in Private Room: Dark Forces to discuss the
game, editing levels, etc. For info on joining, email <DakJanson@aol.com>,
<SkyVValker@aol.com>, or <DfMaverick@aol.com>.

An excellent WinHelp/ASCII-based publication was the "Katarn's Saber Newsletter" (formerly called "The Dark Forces Newsletter") that collected information about custom levels, and even has a WinHelp version of this humble FAQList. Sadly, publication has ceased. For more information, see the Website at:
http://www.inforopa.com/dfn/dfn.html

For exhaustive listings of DF-related stuff, contact the Invisible Knights <ikteam@ibm.net>, or see their Website at:
http://ikteam.simplenet.com/

Links are now dead, but a visit to archive.org may yield some interesting info.

nice find, DSH! Digging up this sort of info tends to be half the fun of Together Retro. :)

Good job, that was one of my least favorite levels in the game. I remember the specific numbers for levels I disliked (3, 5, and 10). I also don't remember enjoying the sliding on the ice planet you go to, but you can get cleats to help with that.

Favorite levels of mine include Ramses Hed, Nar Shadaa, the Executor, and Coruscant. Seriously, Dark Forces is awesome. Also, if you haven't been playing with it, try alternate fire with each weapon. There's a couple that have interesting changes.

I found the IBM cd at the DAV for $2.98 (figured I wouldn't feel bad for downloading if I owned a hard copy). But with Boxer I set it up on my blackbook OSX 10.5. Definitely see how it got labeled a Doom clone. Don't think I will play too much after this month. Not being able to look up with mouse kills it more than the aged graphics.
