Re: Ideas for multiple consoles next to a monitor on a desk?

lol

Maybe one day! hehe. Thing is, not something i talk about a lot, I am disabled and cannot just go mozy around a hard ware store to see what i might like to try :/. I would need to know exactly what i am asking someone to buy for me. Or ordering myself online. I also hate asking people to do things for me that are not NEEDED. heh :/

Most hardware stores here don't really sell things online but you can browse what they sell. So maybe i will take a look tonight and try to figure something out. If not i'll just order some of the those wires cubes.

Buy cheap hand saw
Buy finishing nails
Hammer - check
What kind of wood?
How does a dummy like me make it square? haha.

My brother is actually a carpenter. Well Ice Road Trucker ATM but mostly carpenter. But i have not wanted to bother him with silly game stuff. Maybe i will.

The wire shelves are okay but waste some space due to not matched to width, depth and height of each console.

Material is THIN LAMINATE WOOD FLOORING and WOOD POSTS
Mentioned this in my previous post, an easy custom width, height and adding of layers. Each layer built separately to allow two slat thick strength and adding levels later as needed. The build is quick and so easy to do.

Be sure the saw is a stiff Back Saw, ideal for finish cuts on the laminate flooring and wood posts.

Perhaps have your brother look at the picture on the previous page?
You can add an extra flooring slat or two to make deeper shelves and cut to custom width with simple back saw. The vertical posts can be anything as supports at each corner, easier to hand cut vs vertical entire walls. Simply cut all four posts to custom matched height a bit taller then a given console. Squaring the sides of the shelves really not exact critical, a metal square will help in the 90% angle scribe before the saw cut.

Thanks again. It is a great idea and if i was more handy i would 100% try it. :)

The not matched for width comment is kinda irrelevant though. No two consoles are the same width. Well, im sure some are, heh. I could fit 4 consoles (one on top) and my small form factor Launch Box PC (my NES, SNES, GEN, N64, PS1/2, and GC these days) inside one 15x15 cube. Could probably jam a Wii U in there as well. Cheaper and easier. I think i will just do that until i order a whole new desk setup in a few months (Next time someone i know goes to IKEA). I will probably be getting a much bigger L desk, or 2 big tables forming an L, And then have the space for everything i have PLUS a TV and probably a 24-30 inch shoe rack. Which would be near perfect for consoles.

It is possible wire shelves could interfere with wifi signals somewhat, so be aware of that.

I agree that a basic shoe rack/shelf would be the easiest option. I was thinking about something similar next to my TV, I was looking at these before I just went out and bought a new shelving system. 24" wide, 12" deep, each shelf about 6" high, stackable. Not sure about measurements, but you could probably get everything on there.

I have owned a number closetmaid shoe shelves in the past. My fiance has one right now for her shoes.

Those closetmaid shoe shelves work alright in the short term, but they don't hold up over time. They always start to bend/sag in the middle. They're made from particle board. That particle board is laminated on the top but not the bottom, so they just absorb moisture straight out of the air. After two or three years they're about as strong as cork. Nothing wrong with them short term though. I wouldn't lay anything heavier than an LCD monitor on top because these shelves aren't very strong.

On a more positive note, they are probably the nicest looking solution at a twenty-dollar price point. They're super easy to assemble. I don' know what kind of physical impairment you might have, SuperDerpBro, but so long as you can turn a screwdriver, you'll be able to assemble these without much trouble.

I would say get one for now, and plan for a better solution in the future.

That does put a "damp"er on my recommendation... I'll stop now.

Never owed one myself, but I've had similar shelves from Walmart and the like. My experience with those eventually led me to just getting wire shelves for my retro setup. I agree that the cheap particle board is not going to last in any kind of humidity.

But OP, if you're looking for a solution until you get a new desk setup (didn't see that post when I first replied), those may be just the thing. Plus if you're brother is a carpenter, making something like that shouldn't take him more than a half hour, depending on finish. He probably has scrap pieces lying around that would work.
