For those that don't know, it has been extremely rare to find S-Video inputs on anything for some years now. This is actually the first time I've seen S-Video on an AVR for a long time now from just casual browsing. That's why I was very surprised to come across this.

It has two S-Video inputs (1 front and 1 rear) as well as composite, component, HDMI and digital audio inputs. Better still, it outputs everything over HDMI (looks like it'll upconvert any SD source to 480p). This can be a godsend for those who don't want to mess around with RGB from retro consoles, but still want to tie in their old consoles to a modern HDTV setup.

Anyone know of any other gear (AVRs, TVs, etc) that still have S-Video inputs?

Don't some TVs still have issues with 480p over HDMI? Or is that just 480i?

How's lag running through a standard receiver? I was under the impression the XRGB & OSSC were designed with minimal lag in mind.

The receiver idea only recently hit me. I saw a guy on AA running his Jaguar through one for HDMI out. Got me thinking....

480p over HDMI is standard, you should never have any problems with it.

I've never heard of 480i over HDMI, at least I don't think I've ever owned anything that would output 480i over HDMI. This is probably the problem you're thinking of.

My current AVR introduces no lag. But, of course, it's not transcoding or scaling anything. That said, I would assume an AVR that converts composite, S-Video or component to HDMI would only introduce as much lag as your TV would, if that much. I would expect an AVR (not including bottom barrel) to outperform the TV.

Of course, dedicated scalers and signal processors like the XRGB and OSSC should outperform an AVR. I'm not suggesting that this AVR could replace such devices. Rather, this is for the person who doesn't want to mess around with scalers and settings, having to plug in and turn on too many devices to get going, etc.

It depends what you're after. Me, personally, I already have a Framemeister. And although I've been thinking about getting a new AVR, S-Video inputs for my HDTV don't really appeal to me anymore since I have RGB cables for the Framemeister. But when I was shopping for my current AVR however many years ago, which is before I had the Framemeister, I would have definitely gone for this for the S-Video inputs!

Yeah 480i must be what I'm thinking of. There's those cheap HDMI modules for Wii, GCN, PS2, & DC that I've heard a lot of TVs have issues with.

So if you're plugging in an older console via s video, assume it is 480i for simplicity sake, there's no converting going on to get it to go 480p over HDMI? I'd assume some, but different of course than a XRGB converting from 480p to 1080p.

At least it coming out in 480p so TVs will recognize it. I have a BD player that allows me to manually select resolution. I'll cinfirm my sets support 480p over HDMI. I've never tried.

The manual for that says the output is dependent on the capabilities of your TV, though it does mention 480p.

My assumption would be more that the receiver would either be simply doing passthrough, or it would be scaling to the TV resolution. I think that's what mine does.

That AVR is like $600. Would rather buy a dedicated transcoder

Of course, but if you're already in the market for a receiver, I would take this into consideration.

May depend on what you're trying to set up, as it seems like you can get a lot more modern feature sets at that price point.

Bump, but just as a PSA because I noticed this AVR is still being sold.

I've not posted on here for an age but my retro set up uses a reoativly cheap Denon AVR 1909 which has s-video connections although I have had limited success using them to output 480 over HDMI. Note that this could be more down to me not fully understanding the Denons user interface which isnt very intuitive.

My previous amp, an Onkyo txSR 606 s-video outputs worked a treat via hdmi at 1080i ( max resolution on this amp) so it is possible, but it the amp had issues with its HDMI board ( capacitor problems) so I had to ditch it in favour of the Denon.
