Sony WEGA CRT - HD or SD preferable for classic gaming?

I decided to take a look on Craigslist for a WEGA TV.
I found 2 that look promising for $150 each. Both are 36". I haven't got the model numbers yet, but one is a FD Trinitron Flatscreen and looks like the HD models I saw on Amazon. The other one looks like it's an older SD model.
I'll find out soon what each one can do...
So what would be preferable for showing a great picture with older game systems (NES, SNES, Genesis, etc)
If it turns out that the first one has XBR would that make for a better standard definition picture?
I do not like the picture enhancements on my Toshiba CRT screen. The sprites are smoothed in an almost 2xsai like way that is ugly and messy.

All I know is that if it is capable of displaying any HD at all (some CRTs do), then lightguns are out of the question. Be wary of the FD Trinitron for this reason.

FD just means flat display, AKA a truly flat CRT surface. XBR means Xtreme Black Retention and was later re-christened Xtra Black retention in the 00's and just means the TV can maintain deeper and darker black levels along with higher contrast than other sets and are typically the higher end Trinitrons.

If you want SD to look perfect just use an SDTV. Not matter how hard you try you'll never get an SD signal to look as good or better than on an SDTV on an HD set.

That having been said HD Trinitrons are freaking amazing for HD content.

That's exactly what I used to have, except I had the Japanese version of it. Everything looked awesome on it. Just... no light guns.

I have a 34" Wega and have been loving it (no lightgun though); make sure you have people to carry this behemoth of a television though... mine weighed 200 pounds and was a beast to transport.

Thanks for the replies.
I'm actually leaning toward the HD one now.
I don't have any light guns left, and was never really into games that used them anyway ('cept Elemental Gearbolt, but I played it to death when it came out).
Also I hear a new XRGB will be released eventually - "XRGB-mini FLAME MEISTER" at a more affordable price than previous models.
Yeah, the ad says it's about 240 Lbs. I'll have to get my brother to help load and unload it. Hope it has handle slots on the sides.
Still waiting for replies from the sellers on model numbers.

Can someone with a HD WEGA describe what 240P video looks like on it through Component?

I have the Sony HD CRT KV-32HS500 with a 4:3 screen. It is very heavy, the 36" is even heavier. Not that big a deal, but is it widescreen? The 4:3 screen better for retro consoles, but again not really that big a deal since movies are better with a widescreen. Be careful, new stands may not hold the weight, designed only for LCDs. The HD CRT is a lot heavier then a comparable non-HD CRT. All the weight is at the front of the HD, can't emphasize enough over getting a robust stand. I would even add a center vertical support under the shelf, to avoid warping and eventually collapse.

The only downfall of HD is losing lightgun capability, the current gens all have motion detection now so not an issue. Definitely go with HD CRT over the non-HD CRT. All the consoles look great, including the older 240p retros using the best quality connection for each machine. Toaster NES with Composite looks better the top loader RF signal. SNES and N64 for example looks better utilizing S-Video instead of the more common Composite. PS2 go with Component with a good selection of games at 480p. Gran Turismo 4 and Tourist Trophy can go 1080i, but no zoom in the HD to compensate. Unfortunately no VGA hookup, but S-Video for Dreamcast looks clean. If you do want to lightgun on the Dreamcast, it works great a a VGA CRT computer monitor.

I have more info and a review of my Sony HD at my CRT vs LCD signature link.

EDIT
I saw a Sony CRT HD at the Salvation Army Thrift store the other day. Identical to mine! At 89 bucks a tempting buy to have a backup. At 200 pounds where to store it. CRTs especially as 4:3 HD CRTs are as rare to find as that contest game cart!

From the look of the pictures they're both 4x3 :D and come with original(?) stands. I've moved these monstrosities before (somehow I have 2 CRT 36" widescreen HD Toshibas), so I know what I'm getting into. The second one managed to slightly damage it's own front bezel while being moved despite having heavy padding protecting it.
