But still, I'd say if someone doesn't already have HDDVD drives and media and want to prepare themself for future hardware failure or expand the library they already have, HD is probably pointless. I imagine that most things that were released on HDDVD will come out on Blue Ray. But hey, if there's something exclusive you want, we certainly keep obsolete gaming going here.

Yes they're cheap but it's also a dead format, it won't hold any value. honestly. go with Bluray. the 360 add on drives are £12 in stores second hand here, they're pretty much worthless.

So just to clarify, if I buy a hddvd from china that was destined for the US market, it will work just fine on my Australian player?

Just want to make sure because I'm about to start buying some movies is all.

Yes, there is no region coding in HD-DVD. So any HD-DVD will work on any player.

If I were you I'd get one of Toshiba's 'Upscaling DVD players' that just happen to support HD-DVD. Since it will allow you upscale your existing DVD collection and give the added bonus of playing HDDVD.

I don't think there is a reason to snub the HD-DVD format, the films released for it were the same quality and in some cases were better quality (from comparisons I saw at the beginning of the format war) and best of all they're all hideously cheap. I know i'd definitely buy a HD-DVD over a BD if the HD-DVD was much cheaper. After all, it's the same film at the same quality...

I own both a HD-DVD drive for my 360 and a PS3. When the HD format was announced as "dead" the prices on the discs plumeted. I bought $400 worth of HD-DVD's that would have cost me about $1200 if I had bought their Blu-ray counterparts.

So worked it worked out good for me.

I've bought a stand alone player and a 360 add-on drive (one for lounge,one for bedroom). I'm just waiting for them arrive. I've also bought a load of movies for a fraction of what the Bluray equivalent would cost.

The 360 addon drive that I've bought doesn't come with the driver disc. I've had a little bit of a google around to see if these can be downloaded, but everything that I keep finding are windows drivers.

Does anyone know if there is anywhere that I can download the driver disc from?

I'm not sure it works in the same way as say the xbox backwards compatibility discs do so you can't just burn it, you'd need a modified DVD drive to play it on your xbox. If I were you I'd try and see if anybody on here has one you can borrow and you pay for shipping, failing that, take it back to where you bought it from and ask for a replacement. It's completely useless without the disc.

I'm glad you decided to go the old HDDVD route, there really is no point in not supporting it, since the standalone players play and upscale DVDs anyway, and most people already have a fairly big DVD collection it's not like you're adding another bit of kit to your setup, you're just upgrading your normal DVD player. Plus the media is often just as cheap as it is on DVD. So you're getting HD content for the price of SD. Win-win really.

This is the thing I don't get with HDDVD, it should have been huge, since HDDVD plays on old DVD players (the discs can have an SD version of the film on the disc that can be read in normal DVD players) and in a lot of cases the HDDVD movies looked better to the bluray counterparts.

Only trouble with is that it's coming from the UK and I'm in Australia. If I can't Get it to work on my 360 that won't be that big of a deal because I can always just hook it too my media centre pc I have in the lounge. I've found drivers online to make it work with windows, I just hope they work.
