“Safe” ROM Sites

Post by JD! »

Recently my computer crashed and it looks like there is a good chance that I’ll have lost all of the data that was stored on the HD (that’ll teach me not to back things up). As such I’m now very conscious of where I download stuff from. The ROM sites I used to use to download ROMs (I use ROMs as “try before you buy” evaluations of MD and SMS games) always felt a little sketchy; lots of advertisements, you had to vote for such-and-such before you could download the ROMs and only half the downloads would work.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend “legitimate” or safe ROM sites that are worth checking out for when my machine gets out of the shop.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you are describing romworld. yeah I've had simialar feeling. They are ok, they take down stuff that is being re-released most of the time to avoid people seeking copyright infringment. Alot of the mame roms are incomplete, or don't have links to the bios. I think romnation.net is a bit better, but sometimes they just don't have the games I'm looking for. Plus I use a MAC and don't generally get virus', but sometimes the roms just don't work on the mac emulators. I think torrents are the main source for getting a virus these days. Watch you movie and music downloads. I think those are usually the culprit not game roms.

I'll have to try your link ack....

Trust me.
I second emuasylum being the best they have EVERYTHING AND THEIR AWESOME. The ROMS are free but the large ISOs for Dreamcast, Saturn, Sega CD, TurboDuo, 3DO, and NeoGeo CD are for members only. Its $30.00 for the basic membership $75.00 for the premium its a lifetime membership its worth every penny. I've downloaded at least $3000 plus worth of ISOs off there.

I used these sites in the beginning:

For SNES and N64: http://www.moroms.com

For abandonware and a decent collection of various ROMs: http://www.classic-gaming.net

Thanks very much for the links folks, I'll give them a good going over when I get home (at work now, hee hee).

Yes, it was actually RomWorld I was describing. They didn't have half the stuff I was after. I've tried RomNation but neve rreally enjoyed using it.

That's unfortunate. I haven't run into any yet, but I generally don't seed Hollywood movies or RIAA albums. I imagine most viruses would be implanted in a potentially high-traffic torrent.
