MAME - Credits

Post by Lord_Santa »

playing Metal Slug this morning, got me thinking

when playing MAME games, I try to limit myself to 9 Credits

why 9?

mainly because most Arcade games have a limit of 9 Credits
and even-though I don't like to lose, it still feels as if though there should be some kind of limitation to my continues

I realize that 9 Credits for some games (such as Metal Slug series) is a lot
but keep in mind that I'm no Arcade freak; I play them mainly because I enjoy the style

so, how many Credits do you guys use when playing MAME?
do you have a limitation, or do you just keep pumping virtual quarters in the machine?

i don't care, i get unlimited credit
i just imagine if i was rich in real life and i am back between the 80's and mid 90's :D

truth is, after playing couple of mame games(shadow dancer, Toki) I found out that those games were made and designed in a way that it is almost impossible to complete. Levels start easy to lure you in , but later on they extremely difficult, as in the only way to win is to keep loading quarters in there and use the method of "trial and error" until one of many tries will make you succeed to the next level and so on.

I limit myself to 3 credits. Except in 1-on-1 fighters, where I have no limits.

In the case of Metal Slug, or many Neo games, you could simply set the dip switches to AES mode, yielding set numbers of credits.

Depends on what I'm playing. If I'm just killing time, then as many credits as I need. If I'm playing for challenge, then one credit. Maybe two so I can get a little peek at what's next. In general though, there's no point in practicing level 5 if you can't beat level 2 on one credit.

I don't limit myself at all and since I have P1 coin/P1 start & P2 coin/P2 start both mapped to the start buttons on my Saturn pads, I have infinite credits :)

I love pumping the quarters in those quarter snatchers, revenge after all the real investment in my youth. I think I might ow stock in Williams Robotron and Defender. Well, there is one game I use just one virtual quarter. Reactor, just to get the opening and closing demo with the base guitar kicking in.

Of course, this question doesn't really apply to games like Robotron or Defender. You can pump as many quarters into them as you like, you're starting over at the beginning when you die. I wonder what the first arcade game that allowed you to continue after game over was.

BTW, Reactor is not one I'm familiar with. Funny, I thought I went through most of the trackball games when I got my X-arcade. I must have missed that one though. Thanks for pointing that out.

Just one credit and then I restart the game if I want to play more.
