Non-Mainstream Gamer's Recommendations for PS3

Post by racketboy »

Share your Non-Mainstream Playsation 3 Favorites (Physical releases only)!

Over the next year or two, I'm hoping to start hunting for some quality titles for both my PS3 and XB360 collection -- especially as the games start going down in value (kinda like the Wii, Xbox, and PS2 are right now).

I'm not looking for "Hidden Gem" recommendations necessarily. I just don't really want a bunch of mainstream/popular game recommendations unless they are something that will appeal to the typical habits of myself and much of the primary demographic here.

- Obviously, if there are retro influences, that is a major plus
- Games that have more of an artistic appeal
- Titles that feature more unique or innovative gameplay mechanisms
- Exceptions of popular games are interesting, must-play games

After I process a lot of your recommendations, I will plan on sharing the results with a buying guide later one :)
I'd like to focus on physical disc releases here so there's an element of value shopping and knowing they will always be around

I will have a separate thread for the Xbox 360 recommendations

3D Dot Game Heroes will likely interest you.

I'm on my phone, so apologies it's a bit 'listy', but:

3D Dot Game Heroes
Catherine
Journey
Heavy Rain
Nier (mostly for that amazing soundtrack, atmosphere and storytelling)
Child of Eden (spiritual successor to Rez)
Deadly Premonition
Siren Blood Curse (physical in Europe)

I'll try and have a look when I get home from work and will have access to my collection and PC to give a more in depth post.

I don't own a ps3, but I know of a few games I would pick up if I did.

Demon's Souls
Ketsui (This one IS region-free, unlike the 360 port)
Under Defeat HD (See above)

There are a metric ton of weeby games that look cool too, but I'll leave that for Elkin/Ex.

Puppeteer & Ni No Kuni immediately come to mind of those not already mentioned.

And these are good examples of fairly popular titles that fit my criteria -- nice work!

Is there any advantage of Mirrors Edge on PS3 vs 360?

Thanks. Unfortunately, I'm exclusively a PS3 owner and don't have much experience with 360 ports. Usually, from what I gather, the vast majority of third party, multiplatform games tend to run better on the 360. I couldn't comment on Mirror's Edge, although as a PS3 gamer, I found it perfectly playable. There are some games that are simply not worth playing on PS3 unless you have to though, e.g. Bayonetta.

E.X Troopers! God this game is so underrated! Anime spinoff of Lost Planet. It's very colorful, lighthearted and what remains of Mega Man Legends 3. Insanely import friendly. I beat the whole game not knowing a lick of Japanese.
Strider 2014 again amazing. Maybe best in the series....tho I still say that's 2 on PS1.
Sega All Stars Racing Transformed. Best Kart racer IMO.
Binary Domain. Engaging story and make sure to keep on your friend's good sides..seriously. Shoot robots.
VanQuish. Platinum TPS..shooting robots at the speed of sound.
rain. Very underrated game. If you like your Ico's and Journey of emotional simple games, this is one to play. You play as an invisible boy who can only bee seen in the rain.
Metal Gear Rising. Maybe the best character action Ninja game?
3D Dot Game Heroes. A love letter to NES Zelda with something new. 3D 8 bit world and create your own character. Mine is Adol from Ys.
Dragon's Crown. It's the spiritual successor to the D&D Capcom arcade games from the same director.
Asura's Wrath. Godlike being, family killed, he wants revenge and he is mad. This may not sound so original but it goes over the top Dragon Ball style with planet-sized bosses and even bosses bigger than a galaxy. Gurren Lagen ain't got shit on this. Plus a fight against Akuma.
Kingdoms of Amalur the Reckoning. One of the best WRPGs from last gen. Colorful, great combat. Fun world to explore. Then it has a great trio of names behind it. Todd Mcfarlane, Grant Kirkhope, and R.A. Salvatore.
Virtua Fighter 5. Best in the series.
