Serious XBOX One Question: How can I play DVDs without connecting to XBOX live?

Here's the setup: I don't have internet service at home. My girlfriend has on XBOX One, but she doesn't get enough play time on it. She doesn't like to change the input on the TV and the AV receiver. I bought her a small TV set just for the XBOX One so that she doesn't have to share the main TV set that usually gets used for movies. We took her XBOX One to her parents house to download all the updates she needs to play Farcry. Now she can play Farcry at home, but she still can't play DVDs on her XBOX One. Every time she pops a DVD in the drive she gets an error that she cannot connect to XBOX live. Seems kind of ridiculous that someone would even need to connect to XBOX live to play a DVD. Double you tee eff? Do we need to download special software from XBOX live to play DVDs just once, or do we need to be connected every time due to some kind of bass-ackwards copyright protection scheme?

Now the obvious workaround is to hook up a DVD player to that little TV set too, and I have done that, but the girlfriend remains displeased. She doesn't want to fool around with the TV input menu; she doesn't want a switchbox; she doesn't want an AV reciever. She just wants to pick up her XBOX controller and go. I can't really blame her. That was the whole reason I bought her a second TV set.

Any help?

All part of the plan to make Xbox the biggest platform.

Just want to say that the Duke is among my favorite controllers of all time. Everyone else seems to hate it. I say God bless that magnificent controller that feels so comfy in my gargantuan man hands. The Duke also had some of the best analog triggers of any controller.

Also, it looks like this new version has a tiny led screen. I hope it's not just a gimmick, but that we can use it like a VMU in a Sega Dreamcast game. OK, ok... I admit it... The VMU was mostly a gimmick most of the time.

You have to download the Blu-Ray player app from the store so that DVD or Blu-Ray video discs will function. You'll have to take the Xbox One somewhere with internet access for a bit. Good news is that its a pretty small piece of software. The download should be quick.

Cool! That's just what I needed to know.

seems we've gotten an official confirmation, via Official Xbox Magazine:

Ready for a trip back in time? Original Xbox games are about to become backwards compatible on Xbox One. Starting October 24, you'll be able to use your already-existing discs (if you've held onto them this long) or download more than a dozen OG Xbox games directly to your modern-day console. Time to party like it's 2001!

The list of original Xbox backwards compatible games available at launch is as follows:

Black
BloodRayne 2
Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge
Dead to Rights
Fuzion Frenzy
Grabbed by the Ghoulies
Ninja Gaiden Black
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Psychonauts
Red Faction 2
Sid Meier’s Pirates!
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
The King of Fighters Neowave

The list leaked over the weekend, and was confirmed by Microsoft today via IGN. Many of the games can already be bought digitally for $9.99 on the Xbox Store, but all games are enhanced with 1080p resolution, faster loading times, and faster/smoother framerates.

...some interesting choices.

Depending on how well it works, I might buy a xbone just to play Crimson Skies again.

Its such a good game. It was one of the three I was actually tempted to buy Xbox Live for back in the day.

If they pick up the right OXbox titles, I might be convinced to pick one up. We will see though.
