I clicked on the last page by accident and saw this. Funny how things change. Now Microsoft is doing a better job of backward compatibility than other of its competitors. I played my disc copy of Black for the original Xbox on my Xbox One recently.

that is funny. They've already added quite a few in 2018. Vanquish is now BC as of last week, btw. 8)

Yeah, I'd say they take it quite seriously -- maybe the leader?

Nintendo has good efforts, but not necessarily using existing physical media.

I don't know. I mean I still think Nintendo is the leader of back-compat because of the way they handled:

GB/GBC to GBA (sans the micro)
GBA to DS (until the DSi)
DS to 3DS
GameCube to Wii (until a mid-generational refresh)
Wii to Wii U

Other than the last one no enhancements were made but at least you didn't have to wait till the game made the list to play it.

Overall though, Microsoft is doing a fine job!

I agree Nintendo did a great job in the past.

But Xbox is the leader for current gen playing old physical media for sure.

Agreed! Obviously, the Switch format makes it pretty hard, but bummer the Wii U doesn’t support Gamecube discs as well.

I agree completely on their availability of older games - very impressive!

I'd like to highlight Ryan Lee O’Malley's plight to make Scott Pilgrim Vs the World available for play again.
It's not available because the publisher changed hands and decided to pull it.
It's emulation playability is incomplete.
The only way to play it on a new system is through using an xbox 360 data transfer cable to a compatible xbox 360 system after transferring the purchases of a paid owner of the game.
“my #1 goal in life is to get the Scott Pilgrim video game rereleased. give me time”.

I don't think it's that obscure, but unless you purchased it back in the day, you cannot experience it at all.
The graphics are so beautiful, I can't believe you cannot legally experience them no matter what you do.
Don't even *think* of installing it onto a console that has been prepared to run unsigned code. Ubisoft will be angry.

Not officially... but it is possible to play GCN games on a Wii U. Nintendo even made an official GCN USB controller adapter.
