PC Splinter Cell Players - Help with Aliases please

I hope this is the right place for this question..
I recently have been working on setting up a gamepad for Splinter Cell on PC. Googling helped me mostly: i found some lines to add to the user.ini to get analog movement. I'm using JoyToKey for the rest. However, it seems there's some context sensitive controls I can benefit from. A couple steam forum discussions mention editing aliases but they don't really explain it. I thought I would be able to figure it out but I'm a little stumped. Is anyone here able to explain how to set those up and to help me understand them? Also, on a side note, in some of the config files joy#'s are listed with assigned functions but they don't seem to do anything. Any help understanding that would be appreciated too. Thanks in advance.
