How to dump a n64 rom with gameshark pro?

Post by Kevinj »

I need help with dumping n64 roms. I have a gameshark pro v3.3 and downloaded the software. I have a newer pc with vista 64bit, so I bought a parallel to usb and it don't work. Am I doing something wrong? Do I need an old pc or can I buy a pci parallel board for my new pc? Thanks.

Oh, I didn't even know the GameShark could be used to dump ROMs.

From what I understand, all those parallel to USB things are only for printers. I have a few devices myself that I was trying to figure out an alternative to parallel for. There doesn't seem to be a USB device what you're looking for. There are PCI cards tho, so if you have a desktop, you could add a parallel port that way.

I haven't used any (I keep an old computer around) but I would assume they work. Just make sure the one you gets supports EEP mode, and isn't just for printers.

There's also the Retrode... http://www.retrode.org/

Then the N64 adapter for it... http://www.stoneagegamer.com/retrode-ni ... ug-in.html

It's a USB device that'll allow you to dump N64 ROMs (and hopefully read/write save data after firmware updates).

I know it's about $90 plus the cost of the N64 adapter, but considering it'll also get you the same features for SNES and Genesis (along with any other adapter available) it might be worth it to you. USB is so much more convenient. I actually have a parallel device to dump SNES carts, and I've been wanting to ditch it for the Retrode for a while now.

I think some of those USB-Parallel cables emulate the full functions of a real Parallel port (At least I've seen a client painfully slowly scan a document through one on an old AIO parallel Printer). Usually in the driver configuration there's a huge pile of settings for speed and transfer mode EPP/ECP/etc. You need to make sure that the virtal port is set to the right transfer mode (real parallel ports usually need this set through the PCs bios).

I use a USB-Serial cable to transfer data (games) to my TI-83+ calculator. It took a lot of fiddling with the settings in the driver window to get it all working, but the virtual port worked fine with new and old software after I got it set right.

If it's a software or driver problem, you might want to look into emulating(virtualizing) an older operating operating system. I saw a post on Pocketheaven today about making older flash carts work in 64bit, but it seems to be for driver&usb compatibility so may be useless here, but it's worth a try:
