First a look at a prototype controller with a built in Trakball.

Gerry Block wrote:http://www.ign.com/articles/2006/05/12/e3-2006-bodielobus-hands-on-report

BodieLobus is a young company with a pretty new take on the traditional console controller, and we got a chance to go hands on with the Reflex Control unit. The controller is, at its heart, fairly similar to a standard looking PS2 controller. The big difference, of course, is that the right analog stick has been replaced by a large optically tracked track-ball that performs the same function.

The critical difference I discovered between playing an FPS with the BodieLobus Reflex Control and a standard analog stick is the fact that the BodieLobus' track ball directly controls the speed of view movement, as opposed to the variable acceleration applied by an analog stick. Moving the track-ball a little moved the view a little, but at the same speed at which I spun the ball, as opposed to a little movement on an analog stick moving the view at a slower pace than a full push to a corner. Once my brain learned not to compensate for an analog stick's acceleration, I attained a level of accuracy I had never experienced without a mouse and keyboard combination.

The BodieLobus Reflex Control controller is currently in late-prototype stages while its designers work with manufacturers to bring the product to market. Challenges facing the controller include the fact that console games must support mouse input options in order to work with the Reflex Control, or get a small patch for direct support.

When it comes to first person shooters, it’s hard to deny that a mouse provides more pinpoint accuracy than the average console controller, but using a keyboard for movement can prove difficult for some ham-fisted players (like me). The possible solution? The Paradox, from Reflex, which puts a trackball where the right thumbstick on a DualShock would be. The Paradox also has a USB port so that you can use it on your PC.

I would love top get my hands on the that Trakball Dualshock! The prototype never made it to market. Ah well, at least there is an alternative for games that do not support a USB mouse.

I forgot I already own an optical mouse with a direct PC PS/2 (not Sony) connector. I normally use this mouse with a Dreamcast Adaptor, it beats the Sega ball mouse that needs constant cleaning. A confirmation of the label shows 5 volts at 80 milliamps does work. The Smart Joy Frag mod allows a full seven or nine volts from the Playstation port. Maybe that would very likely fry PC PS/2 connected devices? A smaller risk, but still a concern for more power hungry USB controllers?

Though not rare, a PC PS/2 direct connector optical mouse is not common, will be hard to find in the future. A PC PS/2 connector Trakball is even a tougher one to spot. Definitely grab any that are spotted at the Thrift Store or Swap Meet!

Watch the milliamp input, 80ma confirmed to work. However For USB adapted mice 100ma Microsoft worked but the Dell 100ma did not, even though both mice LEDs lit up.

Devices that work with SmartJoy Frag
1. Any PC PS/2 connector keyboard and mouse
2. Logitech Trackman Marble 804122-00 PC PS/2 plug 5v 10ma
2. Microsoft Optical USB Mouse with PC PS/2 adaptor 5v 100ma
3. BTC M860 Optical Mouse PC PS/2 connector 5v 80ma

Does Not Work with SmartJoy Frag
1. Dell Optical USB Mouse with PC PS/2 Adaptor 5v 100ma
2. Macally USB Trakball with PC PS/2 Adaptor
3. Most USB controllers

General Features:
Orange and charcoal design
4D optical mouse
PS/2 interface
3 programmable buttons
Scroll wheel acts as third button
Two side buttons, five total buttons
Zoom in function
Includes two blue and beige replaceable covers

In the pic, the Dreamcast Adaptor to the left. Oh crap, where did I put the other mouse covers! Orange is for Dreamcast, Blue seems to be a better color match for the PS2.

I picked up PS2 Luxor Pharaohs Challenge. Another game that makes good use of the Smartjoy Frag. The Frag box allows so many various games to play better with a new controller!

A match the colored marbles game. I already have Zuma for both the PC and PS2. You play this one with a regular Dual Shock, Arcade Stick or even the Mouse with the Smartjoy Frag. But a unique added capability! Because the movement of the "Paddle" is only side to side this one also works great with a Spinner Mod!

The Spinner comes in handy, especially when catching all the coins that fall. 8)

How do games like Mercenaries and Ghost in the Shell: SAC work? I am especially interested in Ghost in the Shell as the look speed seems very slow.

The Mouse or Trackball emulates the Analog stick, the speed will be the same. But the mouse does offer a more precise control vs an Analog stick that has to be held.

What is really a great feature is being able to program the Mouse or Trackball to emulate the LEFT Analog Stick or Direction Pad. This opens up to perfect control for games such as PS2 REZ, XBox Panzer Dragoon and various Arcade Compilations such as Centipede and Missile Command that use a Trackball or Spinner. Most of these games use the left stick in the game console now have a better control option with the SmartJoy Frag.

Updated The OP
I bought the Xbox version of the SmartJoy Frag. It works just like the PS2 version and has very similar programming using the keyboard. Tried out some additional PC PS/2 controllers.

The big keys on the keyboard actually work well as "Arcade Buttons" for games such as Asteroids.

I converted PAL Lemmings to NTSC. Turned out the game does not offer a Mouse support option, vital for moving the arrow quickly and precisely. The game has settings to change the analog stick speed, but its either takes too long to move or way too fast to accurately click each individual Lemming. I set the analog stick setting to fast and found the TrackMan Marble FX works perfect, so quick and accurate!

However there was still a problem of reaching over to the Keyboard to scroll thru the different commands. A simple config fix in the built in setup of the Smartjoy Frag for the Trakman three buttons.

Button 1 - Click a Lemming
Button 2 - Fast Forward the game
Button 3 - Scroll Right on the Command Bar

I could have made the middle button scroll left, but I also wanted to have a easy to click fast forward option. It is used to "VCR Fast Scan" forward a game level once you have clicked all the lemmings the way you want. Fortunately the Command Bar scroll click cycles back around the bar again.

There are also exclusive to PS2 Eye Toy levels. Use your arms as a bridge to help the Lemmings walk across to reach the other side. Might have to try that one day with the blinds closed.

This game really brings back memories from playing it on the PC and Amiga. Great playing thru all the levels again not huddled at a computer monitor, but on the big screen!

Nice guide! I didn't even know SmartJoy was a company that made multiple devices. I had only previously heard of the Super SmartJoy (allows you to use a SNES controller on a PC).

Hello There!! :D
I know this is a really old thread, but it is the closest one to my problem.
I am hoping you guys get an alert that I posted here.
I bought the SmartJoy Frag for my modded Xbox. The goal is to use a Trackball for games like Centipede. So I have a PS2 keyboard and a Kensington Expert Mouse model# 64215
I am plugging it into port one. The keyboard works fine and I can program the mouse buttons, but I can't get the trackball to work.... I don't know if I am doing something stupid or what. I chose this mouse because it was mentioned on this thread, so hopefully it is compatible.
Help!!!
Thanks!
Mark

Welcome to Racketboy and thanks for bumping the Thread so others can see.

Kensington Expert Mouse 64215 (Serial Trakball)
The Kenningston is a great Trakball! I use IO Gear Serial Adapter GUC232A to hook up the Trakball Serial cable to the USB port of my Laptop for Mame Trakball games. Have you confirmed if your Trakball works (including the ball tracking rollers) by testing it on the PC? The serial adapter mentioned works great, I included links for the PC and Mac drivers in the OP.

To confirm problem is Trakball or SmartJoy Frag, plug in a regular PS/2 Mouse. Power off, plug in both keyboard and mouse, then power back on.

CRTGAMER wrote:Press F11 for custom programming on keyboard with PS/2 cable plugged into Smartjoy Frag
The mouse will default to the RIGHT analog stick. Unless an FPS, most games use the LEFT Analog stick as the main control. You will have to reprogram to set the ball tracking to the LEFT analog stick.

The keyboard has to be hooked up for the Trakball to work
Purple - PS/2 Keyboard
Green - PS/2 Mouse or Trakball

As for hooking up to the SmartJoy Frag for game consoles, I am guessing either your version has a direct PS/2 connector or includes a the official Kenningston Serial to PS/2 adapter? Be sure the console is turned off, hookup up the Trakball and then power on.

Though unlikely, pop the ball off and check the rollers to see if dirty and rolling properly.

Thanks for the quick reply!!
I did a couple things and will share here.
First, as mentioned before the ball was not doing anything. I could program the buttons, but not the ball. To solve this I had to press ESC + Insert on the keyboard. This then allowed the ball to work.
Second, The ball once working was anything but smooth. I could go side to side but not up and down. So I took it apart and found fibers around the rollers. I cleaned them up as best as I could and it improved performance a lot.
However I am still not content on gameplay. It is still more difficult to go up and down than side to side. I may have to disassemble again and try to lubricate the rollers with some light oil. I am also wondering if there is some fine tuning that is able to be done either from the SmartJoy, the Xbox, or any of the emulators.
It is unfortunate that there is very little information regarding the SmartJoy Frag online. I do however very much appreciate this thread on the matter.

Hopefully this post will help out anyone that was in my boat, and also if you have any ideas on how to improve performance on my trackball that would be greatly appreciated. I do have my eyes out for a Logitech Trackman Marble FX Model 804251 or 804272.

Thanks again for the help!!
