Re: Nomad --- New screen and better battery pack.

by jay_red Fri Sep 20, 2013 1:08 am

I plan on doing the screen mod as soon as I order the screen. The nomad I got did not come with a battery pack to mod, and the ones online are as much or more than I paid for the nomad ($40+) I was wondering if anyone did a DIY battery pack, using a universal battery holder?

I was thinking of getting one and still doing the camcorder mod, but a few issues come up. First is attaching it, you could just use Velcro on the nomad and pack, and that would hold it just fine. The next issue would be the metal contacts that the original pack uses, is it possible to wire it so a small lead comes off of the pack and into the AC port on the Nomad?

I haven't had the time or money to get around doing the universal battery mod but i have reworked the idea of what i want to do i'm think of getting a 2x18650 li-ion holder and a project box to put it in the solder the leads from the li-ion holder to the nomad batery contact the affix the box to the back of the unit. Then buy some good quality 18650 cells such as those from the panasonic ncr18650 series or samsung icr18650-30b cells and the appropriate charger.

To affix I'm thinking double sided tape.

Ugly but effective, I finally added a battery pack to my NOMAD.
For $35 from this website called fasttech i got 2 sets of batteries,protected samsung icr18650-30b's, a 4.35v charger,and a battery holder.

You may notice that i got glue over the game bit screw hole , on my nomad that doesn't matter because the previous owner must have opened it without a game bit and broke off the plastic around it.

Now all i need is my screen which i ordered from dealextreme, i bought one of the loose kind that doesn't come in a case so i don't have to take apart a back-up monitor.

Could you link the batteries you are using? What kind of play time do you get out of them? Also, how did you make them contact the Nomad's contact points?

I soldered wires to the nomad contact points, then using the soldering iron I melted a hole through the bottom of the battery holder so that I could run the wires into the holder.

I'm a little late for that auction, as they are sold out. However, I see that one in your link is 640x480. I'm looking though a lot of auctions and there are a lot of LCDs that "look" the same, but have very different specs. There are a few that look similar to the one you posted and have 640x480 resolution (all from China).

Is there a current listing for the screens that you are using, or can you point to your current recommendation?

Here's a link to one of the 640x480 ones I mentioned: http://www.ebay.com/itm/3-5-TFT-LCD-Col ... 48555a6fe6
Here is one that "looks" similar to your original post: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0594752881

ALL of the latest 3.5" on eBay have the "blurry line" problem. It seems as if they are all using the same controller which doesn't play well with Sega systems.

I don't have a recommended screen as of right now.

What made you stop using the one from DealExtreme? Is that still a good choice?
