I got a free Nintendo 64 today

Post by noiseredux »

My brother found a N64 with a cracked shell, but it powers on so he gave it to me. I have no games to test that it actually works, but it did come with a green controller and a memory card. So that's cool. My sole experience with the console was back when it was 'current,' and I had one friend who owned one. He had Goldeneye (which I thought was alright), Mario 64 (which I thought was just okay), and Mario Kart 64 (which was my favorite until Double Dash rolled around). Outside of that, I've mostly played a handful of other N64 games when they were ported elsewhere (namely OOT and Majora's Mask). I've never really been a fan of the console, but FREE was the right price. So now I have one. And I just realized that with this, the only main Nintendo console/handheld that I don't currently have access to is Virtual Boy.

The 64 came out when I had a ton of kid free time. I played 1,000s of hours then, but don't own one today. I only have meaningful nostalgia for about 5 or 6 games (OoT, Mario 64, Mario Kart, Wave Race, Starfox 64) and those emulate fine. I played a lot of Goldeneye, Pilot Wings, & Wayne Gretzky's Hockey back then but have no desire to revisit today.

I'd recommend you give these a shot as non typical recommendations:
- Doom 64 (standalone game, not a port)
- Quake (impressive port)
- Jet Force Gemini (3rd person sci fi shooter by rare)
- Extreme G (fast paced racing game on futuristic cycles)
[Edit:] Add - Blast Corps (fun 3D game where you destroy everything with machinery)

The Brawler controller seems to be the way to go today vs original controller:

Pretty much all the games you mentioned are on my radar. Actually, I didn't realize Quake got a N64 port, so that's awesome. But for now I'll prob just pick up something super cheap to test it out. It'll be a bummer if it doesn't actually work!

Oh, and that controller looks awesome. I had no idea it existed.

Let us know how it goes!

Mischief Makers & Ogre Battle 64 are usually high on ppl's list, but I've never personally played them. You can get imports running fairly easy. Sin & Punishment is a standout there.

I'm weird & rented Turok too many times as a kid. Not perfect by any means, but I have fun with it as a FPS fan & self proclaimed dinosaur nut.

This discussion makes the 64 mini an interesting topic. I think filling out 30 games could prove difficult. Seems everyone really liked roughly the same ~10 first party titles + ~5 third party others.

Hmm, I don't know. I could probably come up with 30 games for it, in no order:

1. Turok: Dinosaur Hunter
2. Turok 2: Seeds of Evil
3. Mario Kart 64
4. Resident Evil 2
5. Mischief Makers
6. Flying Dragon
7. Killer Instinct Gold
8. Mortal Kombat Trilogy
9. 007: GoldenEye
10. Perfect Dark
11. Paper Mario
12. Ogre Battle 64
13. Quest 64
14. Shadow Man
15. Mario Tennis
16. Hexen
17. Doom 64
18. Jet Force Gemini
19. Conker's Bad Fur Day
20. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
21. Star Wars: Shadow of the Empire
22. BattleTanx
23. Blast Corps
24. Mystical Ninja
25. Shadowgate 64
26. Space Station Silicon Valley
27. Star Wars: Rogue Squadron
28. Mega Man 64
29. The World is Not Enough
30. Gauntlet Legends

I think that's a respectable list, and there are others I'd be willing to add in if I had more than 30.

Respectable list for noise to work from being new to system, but if you remove Mature rated games & Rare games, you're down a dozen or so. Assuming you're looking at a retail situation versus your favorite 30 only.

Two big unanswered questions there...
Will Ninty put M rated games on it?
Will Microsoft license Rare titles to Ninty?

Even DK 64 & Diddy Kong Racing were Rare games.

There's some 1st party titles we haven't mentioned that I'm not particularly fond of:
Yoshi Story
Smash Bros
1080 Snowboarding
F Zero
Pokemon Snap
Pokemon Stadium

Sure I'm missing others.

Hard to beat a free N64. Someone already mentioned it but dude you gotta grab Wave Race. It's usually just a few bucks and is the best racing game on the system.

Wave Race is strangely relaxing to me. I guess it's the music & sound of the waves.

It runs really well on my phone within emu with a BT controller so I boot it up from time to time while winding down.

I definitely recommend it. They nailed the water physics.

I went looking for a cheap game to test it out with. Turok 2 should be here in a few days. Fingers crossed this thing works!
