Drums/percussion in SNES tracks

by marurun Fri May 05, 2017 9:20 am

I've been listening to more video game music lately, and I've been noticing that when it comes to more traditional drum set (snare, toms, bass) percussion, the Genesis rules the roost. The NES is no slouch, either. Even the PC Engine has some games that really mix it up. But I haven't noticed this kind of percussion much on the SNES. Sure, there's bongos and timpani and rhythm sections here and there, but most of the time when I do notice snare, bass drum, or toms they are much more subdued and less snappy on the SNES. With a few exceptions. I want help identifying those exceptions.

So far the best examples I've found are Plok and Super EDF. What else am I missing for some great, snappy drum kit action on the SNES?

I absolutely think the megaman x games have awesome percussion sections. The drums in X3 stand out in particular

Unless I'm mixing him up with someone else, marurun doesn't like the music in MMX. I'm not sure how that's human, but... who knows.

The composition is fine. It's the whiny fake guitar samples. They are like nails on a chalkboard. Also, they do have percussion going on, so they are appropriate for this thread, regardless whether I like them or not.

I didn't know. I mean how could I? I thought everyone liked the music in mega man games.

We've had long conversations on Slack about how none of us understand marurun's ears.
