They're pretty well convinced me to never pay for orbs, ever.

If you have Linde (which is pretty good as it is but can get even better with it) or Ursula, you can promote one of your Odin to 5* and then inherit the Blarblade+ Tome into a blue mage with better Attack stat - which you presumably would then upgrade to 5* eventually, if not already. Then just have some of your other team members have Hone/Fortify/Rally buffs (Olivia has Hone Atk +4 at 4* and is a dance) and you will have a very strong offensive mage.

Male Robin with the high defense and relatively low attack is probably better left with the Blarraven tome to deal with archers, though.

Moonbow, because of its very low charge, is one of the top choices for Specials to inherit.

It's less the character itself and more that I seem to keep pulling the same few characters fairly often. Odin is one that I've gotten at least four times, may have used some to inherit from though, so maybe more. I also have a stack of Felicias and Donnels and a number of other duplicate/triplicate ones.
Point was more that the system in place doesn't make me think putting money into the game will benefit me at all, since I'll just wind up with a few more Odins/etc.

Like someone on another forum said, the far bigger thing would be the ability to pay for feathers  Promoting to 5* is just ridiculous.

Any tips for a new player from you grizzled veterans out there?

I spent all of my initial orbs on summoning - not sure if that was a mistake but... oh well!

I drew a 4 star Hawkeye, Odin, and some priest dude. I also scored a 5 star Cain. Everyone else I got was 3 star.

I'd say the point of the initial orbs is to summon. If you really don't like what you got, I think you can delete the app and try again (and again, and again) until you do. I just stuck with what I got though, either way works.
Putting orbs into upgrading your castle sooner rather than later isn't a bad idea, as it boosts your XP...but you'll get plenty of them via first-completion of story missions anyway.

Higher tier characters are good - they tend to have better stats, and access to more skills (if you hit the little plus symbol by their portrait on any of the team roster things, you can choose to see all skills on their character sheet thing). However, as usual for series, the weakness triangle is a major factor. Having a team setup that's flexible for damage type, and how they can use terrain, tends to be important.

To that effect, you can toggle the "danger area" (or touch each individual enemy) to see where they can attack. Moving out of range and/or letting enemies come to you can be very effective.

The game is inconsistent in predicting SP ability damage. While characters won't miss, you may want to keep an eye on enemy ability counters, not just the predicted HP losses... If I had an orb for every time my characters wound up getting one-shotted from matches they should have won, I'd have a whole lot more Odins.
Really though, sometimes it accounts for the counter coming up, sometimes not.

While the game doesn't have permadeath or anything, a character that dies in a mission does not get any XP from it if you win. Additionally, quests for beating missions tend to stipulate that all characters must survive. So, certainly what you want to shoot for.

How many different teams is it useful to have going at one time?

I built two teams based on different damage types, a little ranged ability, etc. (but mostly speculation).

Initially, stick with one team to focus, with your 4 and 5 star characters. Secondary teams can fill.in gaps for quests to earn more orbs.

For the earlier stuff it's not that big of a deal. The default Normal difficulty for missions is mostly not that challenging, such that a relatively balanced group can probably do most of them without tweaking. It's more when you do Lunatic ones, challenge ones, and so on that it's really important, and by that point, you'll have a good idea of what you want.

Having different teams, or options to swap in at least, is good, but it's harder to keep them all in the same level range until things slow down in the 30s.

Thanks guys.

Is Wrys (bald healer dude) worth including on my main team? I drew him as a 4 star but wasn't sure how necessary a healer on a team is.

If you're a touch overleveled or happen to have very favorable matchups, healers can be a bit unnecessary (or a moot point in very unfavorable matches). That said, they can really help in less ideal matches, and can usually double as some moderate magic/ranged damage if they have a weapon (I think some don't have one learned by default). I've wound up using them to take down heavy armor units that my melee couldn't dent. Inefficient, but it was something.

They tend to be easy to level though, since they get a decent amount of XP from healing.

Healers don't seem like an important role initially, but trust me they are. Wrys isn't the best healer though, but if you don't have a full team of 5/4 stars, put him in. otherwise you can wait for a better healer to draw.
