Amiibo!!

My first two Amiibos arrived today. I actually like the build quality a lot more than some of the negative press before their launch led me to think I would. Princess Toadstool is very detailed and has a very neat pose and Samus looks exactly like I'd expect her armor to look in real life.

Now I just need to figure out how to use them. It's very clever that Nintendo packaged then with a strip of foil on the bottom of the base - I tried to use then without opening the frankly great packaging but no dice.

So far I've created a virtual princess Toadstool to fight with in smash and it does add an interesting angle. Anyone else buying Nintendo's take on skylanders?

Not quite yet, but soon. When I do it will have to be Link, as he has the most features available to him, what with the Smash Bros. character and unlocking the new weapon type in Hyrule Warriors.

If they had a Mr. Game & Watch, I would have bought it ASAP as I obsess over him. Need to start collecting the original Game & Watch games man.

I got the first wave, but I have had no time to mess with them yet.

They really seem like they're different on a fundamental level.
Namely, Skylanders seems like a scam and amiibo don't. Skylanders are split into elemental classes and they are required to play one game, with minimal support in annual updates. Amiibo are compatible across a platform and there's no such thing as "generations". They've been pretty explicit that any mario amiibo will behave as mario amiibo. That is not what Skylanders does. And it would make a lot of sense if that's the reason why Nintendo said no to its exclusivity on Wii.

- I don't see them adding anything truly meaningful to the game experience. The Link one for example, simply unlocks a skin (MK8) and an item (HW, and not until tomorrow) in 2 of the 3 games it supports, and in Smash Bros, they're merely window dressing. I don't see people hauling around a bin full of these things to use in their Smash games, especially when they aren't player controlled. It's like paying $13 a pop for the worst kind of DLC, something that most gamers would scream blue murder about were it not for the 'it looks cool on a shelf' aspect.

- The collectable aspect...I went to a Wal-Mart today, and they had a section set up for Amibo, which was completely empty. Why? Because someone came in and bought them all. Literally all the stock they had. .......OK? That's weird. Hope you enjoy...selling them on eBay? Diving into a pile of them in your basement like Scrooge McDuck?

Like most people, I have various video game knick knackery/figures/books/what have you, but these just don't appeal now that I've actually seen them. Granted they do look nice, but somehow the concept is just hollow and shallow. I'd rather see them dedicate the resources towards games, especially on the Wii U...games that hopefully don't have modes tacked onto them to claim support for these things.

I know the way that I write sounds like "why u mad bro?" but I'm not. I just see this as a gimmick, and the shine is going to wear off pretty quick once the novelty of cheap Nintendo figurines wears off.

Just a heads up, but I've read that these little buggers only have enough memory for one game at a time. I've heard it'll only take about 30 minutes to re-max out your character in Smash if you choose to use it in another game, but still one game.

I don't really care about the game benefits but I totally plan on having Kirby be a permanent fixture on my desk.
