I've been considering picking that one up. I got fed up with the DS version years ago, but I'm thinking the 3DS version might go hand-in-hand with the original in becoming quite a rare game eventually.

I think that 3DS will be around for a couple more years to come at least. As long as there is a market for a dedicated handheld only that sees people wanting to make games for it in a market where the cost of making titles on it continues to drop (and likely kit costs too after so many years) it makes it easier to approach factoring the huge base of ownership as well. No it won't see a big blow out like in the first few years or so, but it should be decent still as it has some solid quality output still. Combine that also with the low price non-3D models in standard through XL sizes any group can get into it easy.

I advised friends to buy refurbished models on Nintendo’s online store. You have the New 3DS XL for $150. The slate 2DS is a solid $60. You can’t go wrong for that price.

No that does work. You can with work beat that price, but it won't come with a 1yr Nintendo warranty so that cancels out any bargain hunting and patience.

It's kind of random but there are multiple 3DS and Switch I think too releases that are 50% off or at least that high or less. I never saw a news bite for it so it's either a quiet sale or a flash one.

This post hasn’t been touched in several years. Didn’t want to make a new post since there’s good history here.

With the full closure of the eShop with the last month or so, I decided to finally install CFW on a 3DS XL. It took no more than 20 minutes. Best thing I could have done.

Regardless of that, there’s still three or four games that I wanted to buy in physical format. However, they’re both becoming more difficult and more expensive than ever before. Back in the day when I was hunting for DS games, the prices didn’t jump so high and it wasn’t particularly difficult to get them, I guess in this post-pandemic world, things are a little bit tougher.

The portables themselves: I still think the 2DS door stop is the most comfortable handheld of the lineup. I live the two crystal colors that came stateside but wished the yellow and black one came over too. I never got around to getting the “new” handhelds for the extra power. The one I would have really wanted was the smaller sized one for the higher pixel density. Those go for big money.

What games are you looking for? I still have 12 games on my 3DS “want” list, and some of them have gotten very pricey too.

Off the top of my head: the two Monster Hunter Ultimate games (3 & 4), LAYTON’S MYSTERY JOURNEY: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy, and Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy.

As much as I want to get those, can’t be spending money at the moment so 3DS collecting will take a back seat. Hopefully it won’t be too difficult in the future for those games. The last one is charting at nearly $100 for a complete copy. The Mystery Journey I have as an iOS game.

There are other games but can’t think of them at the moment.

I've read that some 3DS carts are starting to fail. Specifically I've seen people mention Smash Bros., Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire remakes, and Persona Q.

I haven't had any break on me (although now that I think about it I haven't checked lately). Honestly, it wouldn't be a bad idea to dump your carts and back them up to be safe.
