Nintendo shutting down some Wii services

Post by Duane Dibbley »

Nintendo announced it will be shutting down some Wii services on June 28. I haven't used most of these services much in the last couple years, but it's still sad to see them go. As someone pointed out on Nintendo World Report, some of the unlockables in Metroid Prime 3/Trilogy are only available through the Wii messaging system, so those will be unavailable after the shutdown. I'm sure there are other games that will be affected as well.

We at Nintendo sincerely thank you for your continued patronage of our company’s products. We would like to inform you that a portion of the network services offered through the Wii console will be discontinued starting June 28, 2013.

We apologize to those of you currently using these services, and ask for your understanding. The affected applications are as follows:

• Forecast Channel

• News Channel

• Everybody Votes Channel

• Nintendo Channel

• Check Mii Out Channel

• Data exchange between Wii friends on WiiConnect24*

*Wii message exchanges via Wii Message Board, Mii exchanges via Mii Channel, and exchanges of messages or data in some game titles will no longer be possible.

Following the discontinuation, the above services will not be available even if they are started up on the Wii menu. However, services other than those mentioned above, such as the automatic receipt of “Today’s Accomplishments” on the Wii Message Board and the Wii Shop Channel are unaffected and can continue to be used.

My girlfriend will be devastated that they are taking down the Everybody Votes Channel.

I never really used those features anyway, but it is sad to see them go. My jimmies are a little rustled over the Metroid Prime 3 thing, but i'm sure i'll get over it over the next several years when most of the 7th gen games end in the same boat.

That's a bummer yet completely expected. A while back I went and purchased some Wiiware/VC titles I wanted because it's only a matter of time before the Shop Channel is taken down as well. And I doubt Nintendo will be having a closing down sale. There's some good stuff in there (admittedly not much, and some can be found on other platforms as well) so that's a whole bunch of games that will eventually be unobtainable through legal means.

Seen this coming. Both the Wii and WiiU are similar as far as online access to read weather and news; this is just a move to make the consumer buy the WiiU. I just hope basic Online Browsing and the Wii shop does not go away, I like watching and downloading the demos. You would think the Nintendo Channel would remain up as a sales tool to get Wii owners to buy the WiiU and 3DS.

PS3 and 360 will be in the same situation as their newer consoles come out.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think all the Wii game unlocks are in the disc itself. I have unlocked things in Conduit 1-2, Drawn To Life and Red Steel 2 by simply entering a code. Not positive on Metroid 3/Trilogy, but don't the credits earned unlock the extras?

For Metroid, there are a couple that require trading credits with a Wii friend.

As long as they keep the Virtual Consoles going, then I'm A-Okay with losing everything else online-related.

Even playing online with friends??

Also, now that we're confronted with potentially losing everything, what's the best Wiiware titles? I already know I want Mega Man 9 and Mega Man 10. What other exclusives are there?

Mega Man 9 and 10 aren't actually exclusives, since they're also available on XBLA and PSN. Still good to get, of course.

I'd say Konami's Rebirth titles (Castlevania, Contra, Gradius) are absolutely worth the price of admission. Star Soldier R is good stuff as well and I really liked Kyotokei personally. Blaster Master Overdrive was pretty fun too and FAST Racing League is a good futuristic racer.

For some non-exclusive ones there's Cave Story and La-Mulana.

VC also has Castlevania: Rondo of Blood which is great and runs in 60hz even on PAL consoles.
