Dreamcast Battery Replacement

Post by SpaceBooger »

I'm going to replace the battery in my Dreamcast. Before I do I was wondering what is recommended: the kit with a replacement rechargable battery, or the one with the fuse/capacitor set that uses regular batteries?
Which ones have you done and why?
Thanks.

Personally, I went with a socket and a rechargeable 2032 for my Dreamcast. I don't see the point of the mod that allows you to use a non-rechargeable 2032 (it uses a diode though). I get that the CR2032 is more common and you can purchase them locally, but how long will it last compared to the rechargeable battery? Some posts I've read say they don't last long at all (weeks or months). The rechargeable 2032 can recharge many, many times. Even if it dies after not using your DC for a long while, just leave your DC powered on for a few hours to recharge the battery and you'll be good for a while longer. With the CR2032, once it dies that's it. You'll be opening up your DC to replace it again. Personally I'd rather have to leave my DC on to recharge a battery rather then opening it up and spending money on a new battery.

Thanks Ziggy. I ended up going the rechargeable batteries on both my DC. Now I just need to update one with a GDEMU and the new PSU.

The PicoPSU? I've read that you should just stick with the stock PSU. Recap it if you wish, and load the 12v rail or remove it if needed (such as for the GDEMU), but IIRC it was Voultar that was saying that the stock PSU is better designed. I opted to recap mine, I ordered a cap kit from Console5 along with the replacement battery and holder.
