Help with Colecovision (is it broke, or good?)

I found an old Colecovision console in my basement, and I *think* it works? I have no cartridges to test it with. So here's what happens - I turn it on with no cartridge in it and I get a screen that says to insert a cartridge before turning it on. Fine. But after a minute or two that screen just goes black. Is that what's supposed to happen? Does it sound like this console works? Or should that screen stay on "forever," and this is indicative of a broken console? I'm looking to get rid of this thing, but obviously don't want to sell something broken as "working." Thanks!
