X-Men vs. Street Fighter cab not booting

by MrPopo Fri Jun 08, 2018 8:33 pm

So I've got an X-Men vs. Street Fighter cab I have owned for a number of years, but I haven't used it in a while. I recently moved and tried to boot it up but it doesn't appear to be working. On the screen there is definitely SOMETHING trying to be rendered; there's some tall green fuzzy blobs being displayed while I hear all the fans going off. But it never goes past that. I opened the back panel and didn't find any obvious loose connectors or anything that might have come loose during the move. Any idea of things I should be checking? Is this just the suicide battery?

Check the power supply with a multimeter to confirm all voltage outputs are correct (which will confirm if the power supply is working or not).

You can reseat all wire harnesses. They may not be loose, but they may not be making a good connection nonetheless. You could also clean any edge connector the same way you would clean the pins of a game cart.

Suicide battery? Is this one of those arcade boards that has the game data stored on SRAM to prevent people from copying it? So if the battery dies, you loose the game data?

After checking for voltage and loose connections, I'd suggest looking at the battery. How long ago was it before it was last changed? The typical rule of thumb online is between 2-5 years.

To test, there's a tester chip you'll need to burn. Once that's done, you'll open up your B board, which, depending on region could be blue, green, or another color other than black. Put the tester chip in the right spot, per the instructions, and if everything is working but the battery, you should see the test screen, which indicates the battery is in fact dead.

Edit: Here is Razoola's page for the test chip. Scroll down and you'll also see a visual of the test screen.

Second edit: Be careful when opening up the board. If the battery has died, there is a chance it threw up some acid!

Does the game coin up and make sounds? Register inputs?

Try reseating the neck board on the monitor chassis (while the cab is off)

And that's a good line of thought... Is it the game board or the monitor? If you have a Super Gun, you could test the board out quickly to rule that out.

Unfortunately, I don't have a super gun. I suppose I could try putting it in my Gauntlet Legends cab just to test whether or not it's the board or the monitor. I've got a good list of things to try out now; thanks guys.
