I've recently watched the new Pedro Costa film Vitalina Varela. I've seen a little over 8000 so it's hard to find stuff that stands out, but this was truly phenomenal. Not gonna lie though I barely knew what happened. The symbolism with the darkness and light made sense to me as the film deals with grief and overcoming it, but there's still plenty of other symbolism that I've yet to figure out. Even with that, it was so atmospheric I felt like I was losing touch with reality. To call it gorgeous is also an understatement. Seriously some of the best cinematography I've ever seen in a while.

If you are a horror fan I highly recommend Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning. If you look at cheesy 80s action films, the scenarios are actually very violent and horrifying. This encapsulates it perfectly by emphasizing on the gore and horror. It reaches the point where I would call it a horror film. It's incredibly intense and disturbing.

Interesting list. I’ve seen maybe a third of these, but I am so happy to see there’s someone else out there who likes and respects Dredd as much as I do. It’s also good to see someone else who’s seen, and appreciated, Stranger by the Lake. It’s such a solid thriller. Also, Universal Soldier’s been on my list for pre Isley the reason’s mentioned in your post. I really need to see it soon.

I probably saw a few objectively “better” movies than these, and there are still a lot of films from the 2010s I still want to see. These are the ones I immediately recall enjoying the most, however.

I've heard good things and I was not disappointed. I'd love to see how this fits into the forthcoming Batman film.
