It's not all that bad of a movie on its own merits. Not great, mind you - kind of forgettable really - but most of the real negativity around it is due to how poor of an adaptation it is. They did state it was supposed to be a "sequel" of sorts (cyclical events), but even then, it'd be following up 8 books (and whatever other spinoff material) targeted at adults with a 95 minute PG-13 film. :?

Alright, Terminator roundup part one

I previously mentioned that I had stopped following the Terminator franchise after Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines disappointed me so much. I have since played catch up with the franchise. What follows is not a full review of any of the movies. It's just a few general thoughts.

Terminator Salvation is a surprisingly serviceable action film. I don't know if I'd call it a good Terminator movie, but if I just wanted an action movie set in the future with humans fighting murderous robots, then this would fit the bill nicely. Christian Bale plays John Connor as battle hardened, but he comes across a little bit cold and dry. Anton Yelchin did a good job as a young Kyle Reese. We get a new protagonist who's a bit of a stereotypical badass bro dude with a violent history. He's kind of a wolverine-type with the altered memories and human experimentation. I'll give this movie credit for trying to build upon pre-existing terminator lore. The film makers show us multiple different iterations of the terminator robots, including ones less advanced than the T-800. I enjoyed that aspect. It's not the best world building I've ever seen, but it's something. Terminator Salvation ain't exactly a work of art, but it's a pretty good action flick.

More to come...

Not a film, but I watched the live production of the musical based on Kinky Boots. It's on BroadwayHD and iirc it was in cinemas for a brief time. I've seen the film it's based on and listened to the cast recording tons of times. With music by Cyndi Lauper and written by Harvey Fierstein, it follows the plot of the film, which focuses on a man who reluctantly takes control of his late father's shoe factory and soon is inspired by a drag queen to save the ailing company by switching its focus to high heels designed for, and in this case by, drag queens.

I've also recently finally saw National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and enjoyed it.

So I wrote a ton of little movie reviews on this thread from 2008ish-2012ish, and I just finished the work of transposing the vast majority of them to my Letterboxd account. I am not sure if anyone else here uses the site, but if so feel free to add me! I'd be curious to see what you have up there too...

Here's the general link: https://letterboxd.com/dsheinem/
Link to reviews: https://letterboxd.com/dsheinem/films/reviews/by/name/
Lists (just one so far): https://letterboxd.com/dsheinem/lists/

I hope to update this pretty regularly once 2020 gets started. I have a few more reviews from here and there to put up in the meantime, but I'm hoping to use the site for review-posting from here out...

Gods, I love that channel. Show classics all week, and then by the time Friday night rolls around you never know wtf will be on.

Wait, what? There was a movie? At one point in time the drawers under my bed were plastered with those stickers.

Yup. Came out in 87, well after the initial craze had died down. You missed it. Be grateful.
