Big shame that it's not well known. In fact, I haven't heard of it outside of the film forum I go on. One user was addicted to documentaries and pushed everyone to see it since he loved it so much. After that, it was pretty much unanimous that everyone there thought it was amazing.

Probably a lot others I'm forgetting (and I'm not mentioning really well known stuff like Making a Murderer or Tiger King). I'd also throw in some interview stuff, like Midnight Gospel, Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth, and Have A Good Trip.

Second LA 92, 13th, The Great Hack and Evil Genius. None of them are easy watching but they are pretty vital. I would add O.J: Made in America as a sort of companion piece to LA 92. It's very long, more of a series really, but it is an absolutely comprehensive breakdown not just of the OJ case but shines a light into a wider domain, and is still relevant by doing that, of race relations, class, sexism, politics and idolatry that made up the time, and arguably still do. A lot of those ESPN 30 for 30 documentaries are good but this really pushed the boat out. It won an Oscar for what that's worth.

I'll also thrown in a shout to a British director called Adam Curtis, specifically his films Bitter Lake and Hypernormalization. His documentary style is more like a visual collage, he works exclusively for the BBC and basically collects and collates the enormous amount of footage that the world service either didn't or can't use, splices it with contemporary interview footage and works from there. Bitter Lake is mostly about how Afganistan continually finds itself a target of foreign aggression and why, along with a dialogue on how the most recent invasion was more complicated than the good vs evil schism sold by the Bush administration. Hypernormalization posits that the world is a shambles and the people we put in power don't really know what to do and it does this by tracing a parallel from the 70s between Donald Trump and Hafez al-Assad and showing the best people can do is exploit the madness but rarely control it. It was made before Trump was elected so it isn't a political hit piece. They are pretty long and Bitter Lake can be a bit indulgent (and violent) and neither tries to spell out an absolute truth but they are very interesting pieces of film making IMO.

Sometimes a person thinks too deep that he does not see the obvious, I just went to YouTube and typed "documentary" and got nice results.

Add "the last dance" to the list. i know there probably aren't many sports fans on here, but it's really well done. For all the shit tiger king gets, once you get into it it gets really interesting in a train wreck sorta way.
