Self-Improvement Thread

by TSTR Wed Dec 21, 2016 6:29 pm

Hey y'all! It's your old pal TSTR. I've been on a bit of a self-improvement kick these last couple months, and it feels FUCKING AWESOME! I figured I'd start a thread where we can discuss making yourself MORE AWESOME, sharing tips, resources, stories of achievement, that kinda thing.

For myself, I've changed my diet/eating habits, started working out (cardio/bodyweight work, soon to build THE CHURCH OF IRON in a shed out back to get STRONK), come off all my psychiatric medications, quit cigarettes, cut back on the drinking and dope smoking, and barely look at porn anymore (once a week, if that). I've lost ~25 lbs and counting, breathe better, smell better, look better, and most importantly FEEL better.

I want all of my fellow Racketeers to be as badass as they can be, so here's a place to talk about it!

All of that sounds great (though I can't approve of the porn reduction), but I hope you're coming off the meds because your doctor felt it was appropriate, and not just because you're like "fuck it!"

Haha, well the porn reduction is mainly because that energy is getting channeled into other...um...areas.

And for sure being careful with the meds. Not trying to have a psychotic break or anything...

...yet.

I started something a year ago due to a pretty bad illness that caused me to drop a good chunk of weight in a matter of a couple of weeks. I decided I didn't want it back so I adjusted how much I eat, to a fair degree what I eat, and I've been using a work awarded fitbit charge hr to make sure I pull off at least 5k steps a day on average minimum even if it means going on a treadmill. More recently to re-enforce that I've used Pokemon Go as a motivator too to make it to pokestops and collect a few each day which requires not sitting on the couch or desk chair.

Use your credit cards to clean out food from the sink instead of wasting good sponges, then when your OG like me start using your hands so just in case you need to dig through a corpse for a key ala Saw style you'll thank me later!

@TEK - Much better use for credit cards, imo.

Quitting porn won't necessarily make you lose weight, but it might help out with some Popeye-style forearm imbalances...

Well if they were anti-depressants and they got you out of a rut, that's what matters. Obviously sounds like a LOT going on in your first post there which is excellent. They helped me 10 some years ago, but the side effects were so severe and took so much trial and error to find one that worked... I don't plan on ever taking that kind of stuff again and have learned so many better things since. Think it was Zoloft that helped me. Then I did some anti-anxiety meds a few years later and fuck that stuff to hell, the Xanax withdrawal is legit deadly. Stay away from it.

Diet and exercise is seriously the ultimate combo. Something so simple! I love DDP Yoga.

Also pretty sure light therapy or weather moods are a thing for me. I've been about 20x more productive since I've been a morning person these past few years. The burning radiance of the sun stings me and gives me energy, love it.

Porno! Unless you're religious, or can't stop masturbating 10 times a day or have to look at porn on the phone or work/school computers, then yeah you've got issues. Otherwise in moderation in your private home sectors, I see no issues here. It's entertainment. I'm perverted. It's not for everyone though. If you can't shake the guilt or it just puts you down, then cut it and whatever else that does that out.

Using a calendar and planners works for me a bit. But I think there's good arguments for both sides concerning "goal listing". By doing that... you're looking out to the future a bit too much sometimes and might be too fixated on that. Then if you don't hit those goals, might make you come crashing down. So I don't know. It just depends on your points in life. This stuff helped me a few years ago, but I haven't done it in awhile and don't feel any need to right now. Frankly, I think that 2016 has been one of the best years of my entire life and am completely in joy and happiness with life right now, simply living in the current, and gaining a bit more introspective lately coming up to 30. Good times. This is your journey and story. Take it to the limits.

I wouldn't go too crazy! With food and the likes, give yourself a cheat day or something to have fun with. BUT you have to be very adamant about it and never slip up there or it can mess everything up haha. Anyways I'm not too crazy about it thesedays, I just make sure to eat consistently balanced and get some greens and fruits in daily, basically only drink water, and rarely dine out. Fast few is now only a few rare times an entire year, if even.

Also maybe take some time to think about people you surround yourself with. Don't give toxic people any time. Easier said than done and sometimes getting away from them or groups can be challenging, but you're better off without them. They will in turn perhaps benefit from your absence as well and could be a wake up call to them. Just something else to think about I guess if that applies to anyone currently here.
