Does anyone collect or play rc cars and trucks?
Does anyone collect or play rc cars and trucks?
I came across yesterday a old radio shack dune buggy I'd say from 1986 and it works great. It had the old batteries you put in and 2 speeds. I also own a tyco scorcher and a nikko turbo panther. The top frame is beat to hell but still works and I'm using a different controller but kind of works so whatever.
I would love to get my hands on a tyco turbo hopper and the other model with the 9.6 volt battery pack and also a bandit. Had both as a kid and loved them.
I remember having a midnight pumpkin and a grass hopper back in the day.
The hobby is huge down south if I remember but just curious if anyone still or collects rc or has a really good rc car or truck or boat or plane and if so what do you own.
Pics would be great also.

I haven't in a while, but I still have an Associated Electronics RC-10 World's Car and RC 10/T (whatever the budget version with bushings is) and a Tamiya TA01 that came with a Mercedes body.
Re: Does anyone collect or play rc cars and trucks?
Grasshopper, you're dating yourself lol. I never had one, got stuck with cheap ones during that time like the sears lobo, the radio shack golden arrow. My buddy had a tyco bandit and it was pretty good for a cheapo.
My first nice one was a tamiya hornet. After high school I moved to Texas and they had organized races with computer lap counters, trophies, the whole nine yards. I bought a kyosho turbo ultima. With a lightspeed or pink performance motor, that thing would fly. Couldn't handle for shit though. I ran that in the stock buggy class and a rc 10t in the stock stadium truck class. I moved back to tennesse and there was no tracks/races and lost interest. I did have a hpi nitro rush but got bored and sold it. I have a cheap red kat 4wd drift car to mess with. We have a track and races now so I might get into the short course trucks. These brushless motors nowadays are no joke. They are like missiles going down the road.

Re: Does anyone collect or play rc cars and trucks?
I only ever had the cheapest RC cars growing up, and only a couple of them. Although, I have a car on my shelf at work. Once we order some GoPros for checkout, I'm going to attach one to the car and do a drive-around of the library.

Re: Does anyone collect or play rc cars and trucks?
I remember trading my midnight pumpkin towards a clog buster. I loved that thing but the driving on that was terrible. And then I decided to get another car but I can think of the name. Back then we had to buy the car, buy the batteries and charger, buy the remote, order the crystals, man what a hassle
Re: Does anyone collect or play rc cars and trucks?
Plus you had to replace the bushings with bearings, replace the crap motor, replace the speed control with an electric speed control. I always upgraded to rpm fronr/back A arms.
Re: Does anyone collect or play rc cars and trucks?
Well, I mean, you didn't -have- to, but the end result was a much better (albeit massively more expensive) RC car. I think my first ones were Nikko (I don't remember the name of the first, the second was a Fireball I think, it was neon and had a massive spoiler), and I had a 4WD Radio Shack one before getting into hobby level ones. My brothers had some of the Tyco trucks though.
At one point we bought a batch of used RC cars that included a Clod Buster, but I think we only had one servo in it so it couldn't steer for crap. Also got either a Grasshopper or a Frog with that, and it was fun - drove kind of terribly, but in a fun way, like a lot of Tyco stuff (relative to oil dampened shocks and all that didn't bounce all over the place ).
I think quad copters would blow 12 year old me's mind, and FPV flying even moreso.

Re: Does anyone collect or play rc cars and trucks?
Yeah you didn't have to but to compete...you had too lol. I was deep in that shit for awhile. Tool boxes full of parts and tools, high tech chargers, I made my own battery packs. I lived at the hobby store during that period and couldn't wait for race day on sundays.
Re: Does anyone collect or play rc cars and trucks?
I never really did proper racing, and didn't usually have a good local place to buy stuff either. Hence, I had a terrible charger and one battery, limiting actual use.
I guess there was a track on Yokota AFB when I lived there...on practically the other side of the base from my house. Plenty of parts if what you wanted was Tamiya >_>
There may still be a track across the way from my house now, though the hobby store that was there moved. On the plus side, it's right next to a hot dog stand.

Re: Does anyone collect or play rc cars and trucks?
I only ever had one, they weren't a huge thing on my street. I had this nearly foot long fairly heavy red lamborghini and it was pretty fast. I don't remember who made it, but it was made in the mid 80s (not on or later than 88/89 I think.)
I can't find it on ebay so no idea if it has any value or not, but worthpoint which is a paid auction site (to even see paid values) has it:

Shinsei (Nikko) Lamborghini Countach. It's big like I said 1/10 scale.
Someone made a youtube of it too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5umA4xWPQZk
