Yep, I finished up 24 today which ended on a crazy note.

I keep wanting to try to pace myself because it's so amazing and all, but yeah haha. Super addicting. I'm stoked they seem to be starting up Lockdown which looks like it'll be a new story in the same world or something.

Michael reminds me a lot of myself, for better or worse? haha. But I think this format is amazing because it makes the experience so intensely personal. It's so character driven and I imagine they won't fully answer everything and never give the full side of some stories, which is realistic and done well here. Just everything about its format and delivery to me is really cool. This is the first radio drama I've ever heard though, so I'm not sure how it differs or anything.

Bert has been the show stealer for me. He's the one guy where I feel his voice acting is a little overdone sometimes, but man he's just too awesome.

JT, it does still seem like standard zombie fare for the most part, but they have done some interesting things with them along the way and there have been other arcs that make the whole thing take some interesting turns. One arc reminded me of Lost or something. I'm honestly not even a huge fan of zombie stuff, but I love these end of the world/survival scenarios and settings, so it's been a home run for me.

I am hoping that the story develops beyond a typical zombie story, but I like the multicultural cast of characters and the production values are really high for a free podcast. So far I am liking it, and I know you said it gets more interesting after chapter 3, so I will have to keep listening. I'm trying to finish out the Demon Wars audio books right now though, which I got via humblebundle, so this new story is on alternate for when I need a break from the medieval fantasy stuff.

It definitely branches out from a typical zombie story. Not much I can't say without giving away plot points. To be honest, there's still a lot of the "lore/mythology" questions being answered going into Season 3 but it's definitely engaging. The character development is great.

I put together a collection of some of my favorite old time radio episodes for a friend's birthday. I thought I might share them with you good people as well. :)

This year I found a strange love for old radio dramas from the ‘40s. So many ideas that seem cliché now were still novel back then, and there is something endearing about listening to actors play out all of these silly macabre tropes with a completely earnest delivery.

I also enjoy these because they generally work in standalone 30 minute pieces, so I find it easy to listen to these while I do chores around the house or work out in the yard. I’ve included some of my favorite episodes below. The files are labeled by the name of the series, the episode title, the main actor, and the air date.

Evening Primrose
Starring: Elliott Lewis
http://www.oldtimeradiodownloads.com/th ... 1947-11-05
This is one of my favorites simply because it is so strange. It is a surreal tale of a man who decides he can survive by secretly living inside a department store where he can steal whatever he needs. However, he soon discovers that he is not the first person to come up with this crafty idea and is quickly introduced to an underground culture with its own rules and societal structure.

Three Skeleton Key
Starring: Vincent Price
https://archive.org/details/ThreeSkeletonKey
Hordes of rats! Vincent Price’s inimitable voice is what really sells this haunting story inside a lighthouse that is visited by a mysterious ghost ship.

The Horla
Starring: Peter Lorre
https://archive.org/details/MysteryintheAir
Peter Lorre doesn’t hold back and slowly loses his mind throughout the course of this episode.

Johnny’s Got His Gun
Starring: James Cagney
http://www.oldtimeradiodownloads.com/th ... 1940-03-09
In this story, the main character has lost his ability to see and talk. It’s told as a flowing stream of conscious monologue, so you can close your eyes and imagine that his thoughts are yours. I like stories like this one that really utilize the radio medium.

Thing on the Fourble Board
Starring: Ernest Chappel
http://www.quietplease.org/index.php?se ... sode&id=60
This spooky tale may play off environmentalist guilt as oil well workers discover they have unleashed something evil through their drilling.

The Dunwich Horror
Starring: Ronald Colman
http://www.oldtimeradiodownloads.com/th ... 1945-11-01
This is a classic H.P. Lovecraft tale. Yog-Sothoth lives! And GROWS!

The Hitchhiker
Starring: Orson Welles
http://www.oldtimeradiodownloads.com/dr ... 1946-06-21
This is one of those tales that never quite answers whether something evil is happening or if the main character is going insane. This was also adapted into an enjoyable Twilight Zone episode.

Fugue In C-Minor
Starring: Vincent Price
http://www.oldtimeradiodownloads.com/th ... 1944-06-01
A lot of old time radio uses pipe organs, so this episode made the pipe organ a central feature of this tale of murder.

Ghost Hunt
Starring: Ralph Edwards
http://www.oldtimeradiodownloads.com/th ... 1949-06-23
The original Blair Witch! This is supposedly the found recordings of a cheeky radio show host that went to visit a haunted house… never to return! Dun Dun DUN!

Sorry, Wrong Number
Starring: Agnes Moorehead
http://www.oldtimeradiodownloads.com/th ... 1944-02-24
This is another episode where the material is really well suited for radio. You are essentially eavesdropping on telephone conversations as a terrified woman tries to seek help from an unhelpful operator.

The House in Cypress Canyon
Starring: Robert Taylor
http://www.escape-suspense.com/2007/10/ ... -fran.html
This is a classic haunted house story told with some story-within-a-story twists.

War of the Worlds
Starring Orson Welles
https://archive.org/details/WarOfTheWor ... oRecording
This is the one everybody still knows of today. The brilliance of this episode is that it sounds like you are listening to a news radio program of aliens invading. My favorite bits are when it cuts to orchestra music right after something unusual and scary has just happened. If you were to have believed this was real, you would have had the unsettling sense that the media was trying to pacify you.

I've ran across a couple of these. Is the "audio theater of the mind" a production company or is that a general term for this type of program/audio drama?

JT, only know WotW out of that bunch. Will definitely dig in after We're Alive. You said some are in public domain?

I thought "A movie in your mind" was just a slogan for Graphic Audio audiobooks.

As for the old radio shows I posted, they are all public domain now, and I provided links to stream/download.

Spoiler talk on the later 20's and up through 31, where I've left off for the day:

It finally happened, military intervention. Military intervention moments in stories like these are always a downer haha. And it's feeling no different here. It's cool that these parts usually pull the rug out from wherever a main plot might be going, but I always find plot points like these to be frustrating.

I like where 31 is going though and is back on Saul's perspective. And perhaps the several month time leap will be their way of getting through that military junk to get back to more basic things... if that makes sense.

Scratch is really pissing me off but I'm dying to know more. It feels like they're trying to aim for some redemption with her character, but I don't think I can feel anything for her with everything she's done. It's nice to finally hear more from the "leader" of the Maulers though. I'm enjoying the big dofus Briggs character, something tells me he'll switch sides if it comes to that.

Hopefully the second half doesn't slip up and hopefully this is just kind of a downer transition. But like I said, I'm loving the stuff with Saul now, and Victor is awesome, and CJ seems like a girl you don't want to test haha.

I hate to say that overall I think "season 3" did turn out to be my least favorite. But it still has some excellent arcs. I will be curious to hear your thoughts on it.
