Metal Heads Assemble!!

by optmusprimenumber Tue Jan 11, 2011 3:16 am

Upon noticing the notable amount of metal heads here at Racketboy, I thought it appropriate to start a thread for us. Let us gather here to have our rituals of discussing what is the most brutal and what sub-genres metal bands REALLY belong to. Let us bang heads together and share the names of metal bands we've found or bands we belong to that qualify in some way as metal. While not necessarily just for pure elitists, douches, or metal dorks scrawny or barbaric, a handful of us probably are one of those and this is the place to talk about it, instead of shedding blood in every music related post.

Here goes...
I'm into mOStly "tech metal" of sorts and grindy stuff, bands I enjoy are: As the Sun Sets, Assjack, Beneath the Massacre, Blood has Been Shed (Novella of Uriel), Breather Resist, Burnt By The Sun, Car Bomb, Dillinger Escape Plan, Daughters, Ghengis Tron, Into the Moat, Ion Dissonance, Iwrestledabearonce, Pig Destroyer, The Sawtooth Grin, Tower of Rome... the list goes on. I effing hate "metal core" bands like Killswitch Engage (I know they have the former Blood Has Been Shed singer)... I think they're crap. Older metal hasn't held my attention too much, I grew up on some Metallica but stopped listening to them a while ago.

I'm currently involved in a metal band of sorts called Beat the Doll. I play guitar and my buddy Shane is the drummer. Our singer, Tom, is appropriately crazy. As much as I'm into the techy-grind stuff, it's not what we play. That sort of skill is not within my capacity. We still need a bass player so if any of you are one of those and are in the Waterbury area of CT PM me. Click the link in my sig to hear us!

daughters? hell songs is not really a metal record...

i like black sabbath, a LOT. iron maiden is probably my second favorite metal band. slayer would be third.

i love thrash, like attitude adjustment, beyond possession, nuclear assault, cryptic slaughter, suicidal tendencies, even megadeth and metallica.

i like some metalcore bands, like maybe shai hulud and misery signals, but i prefer the older style of metalcore, like 90's style, more hardcore than metal, like morning again, despair, abnegation, day of suffering, etc.

i like a lot of grind also, like discordance axis/gridlink, nasum...

i don't care for these nü-jack pornogrind turds who think they can just play a bunch of arpeggios and be legit. i never cared for the dillinger escape plan because it felt like a lot of technical prowess with no feeling behind it.

EDIT: I am also a huge Black Sabbath fan pre-Dio era. Never really got into Ronnie's singing.

that's what i'm talking about!

hell songs, it's a weird one, but canada songs, that's tech metal for sure.

and yeah, usually fans of older movements are put off by newer ones... that goes for all genres. ...I'm on me Wii right now, I'm sick of typing this way

I think we had a metal thread, but whatever. I like thrash, though I don't actually listen to much of it, but I like old school Metallica(Ride the Lightning and Puppets), with I think was mostly thrash metal.

Other random stuff I like would be Judas Priest's Painkiller album, random Black Sabbath and Ozzy songs, some of Motorhead's music, a lot of songs by Mercenary and even though they are not a metal band I have to say how awesome Coheed and Cambria is.

I also like some of the so-called Gothenburg bands, as well as some melodic death metal stuff like Dark Tranquilliity's Damage Done,Character and Fiction albums, early In Flames, the Band Eternal Tears of Sorrow, Dethklok and a few Arch Enemy songs. I generally don't like straight death metal or black metal, just the melodic or Gothenburg stuff and some progressive stuff like Into Eternity's Burried in Oblivion album. I used to hate death metal vocals at one time but have gotten used to them. I still like clean vocals the best though in my metal music

Most of my favorite music though consists of symphonic metal bands and some Power Metal bands. I'm really into Nightwish, Iced Earth, Kamelot, Sirenia, Delain, some of Liv Kristine's work with Leaves Eyes', a couple of Epica songs(Design Your Own Universe is a near perfect album), Jag Panzer and whatever you would classify Ayreon as. There are some Therion songs I love as well as well as some of Tarja Turunen's recent solo work.

Now I know some people don't consider Goth metal to be a real genre, but a couple of bands I really like get labelled as such like Sentenced for example, Charon or Unsun

Generally speaking, most of the metal I listen to is European or has European influences. I've noticed a bunch of my fave bands are from Finland like Apocalyptica and I already mentioned Nightwish and Sentenced. Finland makes good metal

Megadeth. The guys seem like dicks but the musics awesome. Also since seeing them live i've really grown on Dragonforce, as strange as they are, simply because the giant industrial fans blowing into the audience was INSANE!

I also dig pre 'Load'-era Metallica, any Megadeth, all Sepultura, Killswitch Engage, Amon Amarth, Horse the Band, Genghis Tron, All That Remains, and last but not least - HYPOCRISY!

I'm a huge Judas Priest fan. I've got their entire discography (major releases) on CD and Vinyl (minus 3). I've also got 2 JP tattoos on my left forearm.

Also into pretty much any post ELF Ronnie Dio stuff. Never been a fan of Black Sabbath, but I love Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules. Those albums blow me away. Also into Blind Guardian (probably my next tattoo), Iced Earth, Helloween, Iron Maiden, Kamelot, Steel Prophet, Bal Sagoth, Nightwish, and tons of others.

My guilty metal pleasure is Stryper. I've got a bunch of their stuff on Vinyl and they kick so much ass.

I've been more a 80s metal fan out of all. I like Thrash Metal, Traditional Metal (I hate saying that, I just say Heavy Metal), Death Metal ect. ect. The problem with me that I know most metal from 1978 to 2007 (the Thrash Revival time), I mean most metal bands nowadays don't wow me as much, so I explore other styles of music like punk, rap, hell even electronic music. Don't get me wrong my favorite style of music is still Thrash Metal, I've even thought of forming a Thrash Metal band myself, but I am too lazy and at the same time too busy.

Hey, since you are from Waterbury, have you ever went to Phoenix Records?
