black metal...

technical ability...

what? I don't think you have ANY clue what this music is supposed to be about.

Niode wrote:I grew out of black metal when I was 16. Such an utterly pointless genre of music. I'm convinced that the only reason 'metal' fans like it, is because it's still fairly obscure so they can be a dick in public by quoting all these obscure black metal bands. Black metal is just crap.

Same goes for you. I would go on, but honestly there's little point in it, since I imagine you'd listen to my viewpoint on the merits of the genre about as intently as Roger Ebert listens to the viewpoints of gamers on the merits of their medium.

Anyhow, Yeah Negura Bunget is pretty cool. I liked "Om" a lot at least. My favorite black metal band is most definitely Sigh, I absolutely love every release they've put out, though honestly aside from them I'm not too super-keen on most black metal. I like Mayhem, Immortal, and Burzum, I've enjoyed what I've heard of Angelcorpse, Destroyer 666, and Deathspell Omega, and I've enjoyed Sarcafago too.

I really really like the first Darkthrone album, though that's not really a black metal album.

Honestly though, a retro gaming forum is the one of the LAST places I'd go to talk about metal (especially extreme metal.) It's hard to have a discussion when you inevitably have a few people coming in to tell you how your preferred genre's nothing but obnoxious noise. I'd go to a metal forum or something.

Exactly what I was thinking... If you wanna go talk Shit Awl and Gay Bulbs, go somewhere else. US BM sucks anyways.

Here's your best bet- http://thestench.freeforums.org/index.php

Maybe you can buck up while you're there and get into some PE too.

I think the only US BM band I'm even familiar with is Xasthur, and I've never even listened to anything from that.

I used to be reallly into Black Metal, and I honestly can't even remember half the bands I listened to, for such an underground genre, there sure are a lot of bands! Mayhem, Bathory, Venom, real early Dimmu Borgir, Darkthrone and Emperor are some I can recall right now

a lot of the "black metal underground" consists of well, "bedroom bands". Basically folks working alone who think they can be the next Burzum and can generate good atmosphere (which is really what the genre is all about imo) by simply recording things badly. Not to mention the "true" black metal elitist types who think the entire genre should have a singular, cohesive, and strictly defined sound, despite the fact that pretty much ALL of the genre's forefathers sounded very distinct from each other (and that's not even counting the first wave bands!)

There are LOTS of excellent bands out there who try to do new and interesting things with the genre though too, unfortunately the aforementioned crap ends up being what get stuck to the label as the typical stereotype. A damn shame really.

I like Darkthrone, Mayhem, Immortal, Burzum. The big names. I don't get too into black metal. I like Wolves in the Throne Room.

Transylvanian Hunger is probably my favorite BM album.

I like Venom and Bathory but do not consider them to be BM, just bands that influenced BM.

You guys should really check out Sigh if you haven't, especially if you like really experimental stuff (to the point of being downright goofy sometimes, I mean an upbeat black metal song with a disco break!?). Still though, really ambitious and even fun band with a really unique sound.

Sigh is a Japanese band aren't they?

I love a lot of Japanese punk and hardcore but have never really heard any Japanese BM.

I don't really listen to much Black Metal, but I do listen to a bit of Blackened Death/Thrash Metal ie. Skeletonwitch (apparently), Aura Noir, God Dethroned, Destroyer 666, etc.
